Football Is Back—Aaron Rodgers & The Jets In Action Tonight
Good morning, Sports fans! Davey Mac here with another Sports Report for ya! We’ve got some World Cup sniping between U.S. stars! Baseball and basketball updates! And more! But first!
Cue the classic NFL Films music…because football is back TONIGHT! The New York Jets take on the Cleveland Browns in Canton, Ohio at 8 PM (Eastern) on NBC! BAM! Obviously this is the debut of the Jets’ huge new acquisition Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers looks to get the Jets to the Super Bowl for the first time in over 50 years.
Will he succeed? Who knows? But one thing is for sure…all eyes will be on the Jets as Gang Green will be in the spotlight this year. Between the Rodgers deal…the Jets appearance on this year’s HBO Hard Knocks…the smack-talking with the Denver Broncos new head coach Sean Payton…this team should be fun to cover! So get ready for some football…TONIGHT!
Baseball. Stop the presses the Yankees won! The Yanks beat the Rays yesterday…7 to 2. Gerrit Cole was excellent as usual as he picks up the win and improves to 10 and 2 with a 2.64 ERA for the season. Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Volpe each homered for the Yankees…who improve to 56 and 52 (still in last in the A.L. East).
The Mets were shut out by the Royals…4 to nothing. The Mets drop to 50 and 57 for the year.
The Phillies fell to the Marlins…9 to 8. The Phils are now 58 and 50 on the season.
Back to the Yankees for a second… right-hander Domingo German has voluntarily entered inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse. German was placed on the restricted list while he undergoes treatment. German threw a perfect game on June 28th in Oakland.
Football. Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard was activated from the physically unable to perform list recently and says he “felt great” this week in practice. Shepard has struggled to stay healthy in recent years but if he can stay on the field he’s a good weapon to have.
Basketball. The 76ers announced that veteran center Montrezl Harrell had undergone an MRI that revealed both a torn ACL and a torn medial meniscus in his right knee after swelling following recent workouts. Harrell backed up NBA MVP Joel Embiid.
Soccer. Women’s national team captain Lindsey Horan pushed back against negative comments from legendary former player Carli Lloyd…saying Lloyd’s criticism of the team’s mentality “hurts” and is “frustrating” but it’s just “noise.” Lloyd stirred controversy by saying: “I’m just seeing a very lackluster, uninspiring, taking-it-for-granted, where winning and training and doing all that you can to be the best possible individual player is not happening.”
Meanwhile…according to People magazine…The Jamaican women’s team needed a GoFundMe just to be able to afford their trip to the World Cup . . . but they just eliminated Brazil to make it into the knockout round! Congrats, ladies!
