The report says that Katalin’s hiking partner called 911 after the initial accident, but when paramedics arrived on the scene, she didn’t display much need of assistance. Initially, both of the people – being experienced hikers – wanted to just wrap up the hike themselves but the medical professionals convinced them to allow to medivac out of the accident with a helicopter.
That’s when things went absolutely 100% crazy. After being strapped into the rescue basket, the helicopter lifted off for the quick trip to safety off the mountain. However havoc set in almost immediately. The basket began to spin and spin. It spun faster as faster creating more and more problems for the woman who really just wanted to, “walk it off”.

Helicopter Rescue Goes Crazy, The Finish
Eventually, the helicopter was able to set Katalin down and they arranged for ground transportation for the rest of the trip. However, the helicopter rescue caused more problems than the actual fall while hiking.
Katalin ended up with a $450,000 settlement from the city of Phoenix but that hardly seems like enough of a payout after watching that stretcher spin out of control.
So, Why Did This Happen?
According to comments online, the spinning effect of the helicopter is controlled by attaching a control rope to either or both ends of the stretcher. This emergency rescue team didn’t connect that control rope correctly, leaving the hiker to spin out of control upon liftoff.
