Meet The New Champion: The Hottest Pepper In The World
Woman lips and chili pepper
Toto, we’re a long way from the Jalapeno. The Carolina Reaper has been defeated. Sort of. Pepper X, cultivated by the same guy who came up with the Reaper, has been certified by the Guinness Book Of World Records as the hottest pepper in the world! Wait, the same guy?
Meet Ed.
Smokin’ Ed Currie, that is. Ed is an All American chili pepper breeder, who is the founder and owner of the PuckerButt Pepper Company, in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Ed first gained fame when he cross bread peppers to come up with the scary looking and even scarier sounding Carolina Reaper. In 2013, the Reaper unseated the Scorpion Pepper as the hottest in the world. In case you are wondering, the Ghost Pepper held the title from 2007 all the way up to 2011. So it’s been a nice 10 year run for the Reaper. Quite honestly, it could have easily remained the hottest pepper in the world. With it’s 1.64 MILLION Scoville Units, more than double the Ghost Pepper. Find out more about Ed at the Puckerbutt Pepper Company website:
Meanwhile, a 10 year run was enough time for Smokin’ Ed to do a little thinkin’, and a little cultivatin’, and a little plantin’. Thus, was born the pepper simply known as “X”. Not to be confused with Twitter. Pepper X is not your Daddy’s Reaper.
X Marks The Spot.
The world record comes at a time when the Carolina Reaper is not only the 10 year hottest pepper in the world champ, but also one of the most popular peppers in the world. From sauces, to salsas, dried chili and powder, to seeds Ed will sell you for planting. Everyone has been all over the Reaper for years now. Maybe that’s why Ed felt the need for a new contender? Furthermore, maybe not enough people were fearing the Reaper? Well fear the Pepper X you must. It clocks in at approximately 2.693 Scoville Units. That is more, than 1 Million…. ONE MILLION, more Scoville Units than the Carolina Reaper. Mr. Currie, sir, well done.
Believe it or not, Jimmy’s first job was overnights at a Christian Radio Station. He claims he got into radio because like Rocky Balboa once said, “cause I can’t sing or dance.” Jimmy loves to write about all local happenings, especially around his town of Toms River.
