Wrestling Legend And WWE Hall Of Famer Terry Funk Dies At 79
Good morning, wrestling fans. We’ve got some sad news to report as wrestling legend and WWE Hall-Of-Famer Terry Funk has died at the age of 79 after battling dementia and other health issues.
Funk was known as one of the wildest and authentic wrestlers ever…bring a certain crazy reality to the ring every time he stepped in it. Funk had that special maniac aura that made him a captivating figure in wrestling.
Terry’s older brother, Dory, was also an acclaimed wrestler…though with a more direct style. And by the late 1970’s, both Funks were big-time wrestlers.
In the 1980’s, Terry journeyed to wherever his heart guided him. He worked for All Japan Pro Wrestling…wrestled in WrestleMania II with the WWE…and then WCW where he would feud brilliantly with Ric Flair.
When the 1990’s arrived…Terry would continue to perform in Japan…but he would also take his talents to the new, buzz-worthy promotion ECW. Short for Extreme Championship Wrestling…Terry…then around 50 years old…would embrace the “extreme” aspect of the organization and he had insane matches that popped the Philly crowds.
Terry would also return to the WWE in the late ’90s as the character “Chainsaw Charlie” where he teamed with legend Mick Foley…and the two would go on to become WWE Tag Team Champions.
Before The Rock or John Cena, Terry made the transition to movies by getting roles in Roadhouse, Over The Top, and Paradise Alley. Terry was also featured prominently in the brilliant, behind-the-scenes wrestling documentary, Beyond The Mat.
Perhaps the biggest contribution that Terry Funk has made has been his considerable influence on future generations. The aforementioned Mick Foley cites Terry as a hero…as do popular wrestlers Jon Moxley, Tommy Dreamer, Tax, and many, many more.
It is a big loss for the wrestling community…but Terry Funk’s legacy is secure. He will go down as one of the most fascinating and wildest legends of all time. Rest in peace, Terry.
