OK, fellow New Jerseyans…we need to answer this question today once and for all. When it comes to convenience…Jersey is king! Hell…we are now officially the ONLY state in America where we still have our gas pumped by others! And I ain’t complaining!
But today…in a new segment I’m calling The Gist of Jersey…we’re crowning our best convenience store! And since we’re in the great Garden State…we’re looking at the two heavyweights of the division…7-11 Vs. Wawa.

Dallas, Texas-based 7-Eleven, Inc., the world’s largest convenience store operator, reported on May 9, 2003 total sales for April 2003 of $897.0 million, an increase of 7.4 percent over the April 2002 total of $835.5 million, the 70th consecutive monthly increase in U.S. same-store sales. First up…Wawa. According to the website ScrapeHero…there are 283 Wawa’s in Jersey…more than any other state in America. With a population (according to the most recent U.S. census) of 8.8 million people, that averages to one Wawa per 31,000 people. Pretty good!

Now, also according to ScrapeHero, Jersey has 355 7-11’s…which averages to one 7-11 per 25,000 Garden State residents. Excellent numbers for 7-11.

Now…for food…I think Wawa may have the edge. Their subs are good and the breakfast foods are tasty, too. Plus, they make a real good cup of joe.

Of course…7-11 has the legendary Slurpee. And that’s hard to beat. Ultimately…this is a fantastic match between two excellent competitors…but I’m giving the edge to 7-11! Sorry, Wawa…I love ya! But the Slurpee is my go-to drink for hangovers! 7-11 in the winner!
