The Rat Reviews The Batman!
Holy Awesomeness, Batman! East Side Dave (of the Morning Rat Race) here and I just saw The Batman (the new batflick starring Robert Pattinson) and I gotta tell ya…the movie rocks!
Paul Dano is creepy and disturbing and fantastic as The Riddler. Colin Farrell‘s Penguin was cool…not used a ton…but it seems that they’re setting him up to return in a larger capacity for the sequel. Other standout stars who delivered excellent performances were John Turturro as mob boss Carmine Falcone, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as the Catwoman, and Andy Serkis as Alfred.
The movie that I would compare The Batman to is David Fincher’s sinister masterpiece Seven. The Batman works on a film noir level…with more darkness and mystery surrounding the Caped Crusader than usual. Batman almost works like a detective rather than a conventional superhero…using his mind as much as he uses his fists. But don’t get me wrong…the action is tremendous…and the gritty and realistic vibe will appeal to fans of Christopher Nolan‘s brilliant Dark Knight Trilogy.
And, lastly, there’s the amazing usage of Nirvana‘s “Something In The Way” throughout the film. Not only did they play the actual version of the track multiple times in the movie, but they also had an orchestra perform the hook of the song in powerful moments where Batman was kicking someone’s face in.
All in all…The Batman is a new, fresh, cool look at the legendary Caped Crusader. Two thumbs up!
