(WATCH) Jersey Rock Video of the Week: Nick Ryan And The Mess “Waiting”
Debut Single “Waiting” Out Now!
Nick Ryan And The Mess released their debut single “Waiting” on 5/3/2020. It was a long time coming. Nick Ryan has been an integral part of the Jersey Rock scene for years, playing in a number of bands including Jersey Rock Veterans Levy & The Oaks and The Taylor Tote Band. Once content to lend his skills to the background, he recently took center stage with his group Nick Ryan And The Mess. His band’s debut single pre-dates their existence. Nick has held onto the track “Waiting” for some time. He recently recorded the official version with his current line up of Jimmy Franklin, Julian Michalski, Casey O’Conell, Jordan Bowen, and Michael Squillace at Submergent Studios in Middletown. It was produced and engineered by Pete Andrews. You can stream it now on all platforms!
“Waiting” was worth the wait. Right now is the perfect time for this song. The tune was written about a real life person, who always seemed to pick the wrong lover and was thus “waiting on another goodbye.” In the midst of a global pandemic which has literally put the world on hold the song takes on a new meaning. Everyone is waiting right now; waiting for the storm to pass, waiting for things to get better, waiting to say goodbye to Covid-19.
“Waiting,” has been in the Jersey Rock catalog for over a year. Since the first time I heard it, I was certain it was a hit. It has a rich sound, an upbeat vibe, and a truly catchy hook. I don’t like to use the term “Pop Rock” because “Pop” has become synonymous with mass-produced, cookie-cutter throw-away tunes. However, this is a Pop Rock song. It is not, however a Pop Rock song for the reasons I just laid out. “Waiting” does not check a bunch of boxes to attain this title. It earns a far-reaching, mass-appeal rating on its own merit. It can touch people because it is masterfully crafted. It’s the kind of feel-good tune that many people of differing musical tastes can appreciate.
However, if the song were to attain mass appeal, it would need a vehicle. A music video was a must. After interviewing Nick about the single’s release almost 2 months ago, I had an idea that framed the track within the current world of social distancing. I e-mailed Nick and guitar player Jimmy Franklin around 3 AM to share it. They took my notes, added their own ideas and got to work putting together a music video. Nick brought in director Dan Saulnier and actress Sydney Miller to bring the vision to life. In the era of social distancing this was no small feat. Everything had to be shot remotely, with Dan directing from afar. The final product is a work of social distancing in more ways than one. It is something truly special and I am honored to be credited as an Executive Producer on it.
