New Jersey Festival Of Ballooning Canceled In 2024
Organizers have announced that the 2024 New Jersey Festival of Ballooning has been canceled. The shocking announcement came nearly half a year before its annual event at a small, local airport in Readington, New Jersey. In 2023, the festival celebrated its 40th anniversary. 41 will not happen, at least until 2025.
The festival began as a way to celebrate ballooning in New Jersey but has itself ballooned into a major production with one of the largest gatherings of balloon pilots in the country and a popular music element that in recent years has featured Kool and the Gang, George Thorogood, The Beach Boys, Peter Frampton, Styx, Kansas and more.
It could be the growth of the event that has brought the balloon festival down. According to a statement by the event’s organizer, Howard Freeman:
“Coming out of the 2020 pandemic, we have seen an exponential increase in operational costs. Inflation, supply chain interruptions, vendors who went out of business during the pandemic, competition for scarce resources from festivals worldwide, along with drastically increased fees set by musical talent, make it extremely difficult to present a quality event.”
The statement announcing the cancellation of the 2024 event included the fact that the event is a family-friendly event that, year in and year out, provided a spectacle of skyward views of balloons nearly as far as the eye could see. The early morning and late afternoon balloon launches were amazing to watch. The coordinated launches required lots of volunteers to help the balloon pilots organize their departures. Many of the volunteers were teenagers from the local community who grew up seeing balloons quietly glide through the distance.
What’s It Like To Be In A Hot Air Balloon?
As a person who has actually flown in a hot air balloon, I can attest to the absolute magic of the experience. I had the opportunity to ride in a hot air balloon twice. Each time it was a mesmerizing experience. Floating silently high above the ground, drifting in the breeze was the most amazing adventure. Gotta be honest: I was scared to death during the first launch. The winds had picked up and the basket rocked violently as we remained tethered to the ground. However, when the ropes detached and ascended, I soon realized we wouldn’t drop and my energy calmed. I’ll never forget flying above the fields and farmland, seeing birds fly underneath us as I watched the cars drive below on ribbons of asphalt. I still get chills when I think about it.
The cancellation statement from Freeman continued:
We “have made the extremely difficult decision to place it on a one-year hiatus in order to reimagine, refresh and relaunch the next version of this great festival in 2025.”
So, the good news is that the organizers of this event do plan to bring it back in 2025. What it may look like in 2025 is up for debate. Will the live entertainment factor change? What about ticket prices… will they remain affordable? Perhaps we’ll see more sponsorships to provide the economic support the festival needs. Will it be at the same venue? Time will tell.
