Watch Mick Jagger’s Television Debut (It’s Not What You Think)
Mick Jagger’s TV debut wasn’t what you think. Did Mick debut those pouty lips when the band released their first single to England’s public access TV station? No. Did Mick debut as part of a joint marketing campaign between his record label and a English blue jeans producer? No. The Rolling Stones frontman debuted on English television long before he was a rock star. See the video below.
Nowadays, Jagger is no stranger to screens large and small all across the planet. There isn’t a TV channel that hasn’t broadcast Mick on it. Seriously, it’s probably easier to count the channels that haven’t had Jagger’s face than have. However, there was a time when the world didn’t know that guy. Today, in The Pit, we take you back to a time in history where not only were the Rolling Stones not a household name, but the name Mick Jagger didn’t mean anything either.
The year was 1959. A young man referred to as “Michael” by the television host is sitting with a small group of other young men. The boys and the announcer look to be perched atop a ledge on a rock. The picture is black and white, the image is grainy, but one half second on the screen is enough for rock fans all over the world to recognize that kid sitting on that rock.
So what’s the story behind this television appearance? Well, the television “presenter” is none other than Joe Jagger. Joe Jagger is Michael Jagger’s father. Joe Jagger was a P.E. Teacher in the local school district, that’s Physical Education. Joe turned his expertise in Phys Ed into a place on the local television system. Mr. Jagger did programs about keeping active, being outdoors, working out and so forth. Joe Jagger’s show was called “Seeing Sport” and he often brought his kids on his show to demonstrate various activities.
A 15 year old Michael “Mick” Jagger debuted on “Seeing Sport” to show off his rock climbing sneakers. (As a funny aside, knowing that the host of the show is Mick’s dad… pay attention to the look that he gives his dad. Is it me or is it totally a, “OK, enough already, dad” type look?)
