East Side Dave’s Top 5 Pearl Jam Covers (With Video)
What’s up, Rat Rock Nation?! Davey Mac a.k.a. East Side Dave a.k.a. Pearl Jam Freakazoid here with a new Top 5 for ya. And for this list…we’re looking at Pearl Jam! The legendary Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall Of Famers from Seattle (and Chicago) have had an amazing, 33-year career (Ten debuted in 1991)…and they’re still going strong.
As an avid PJ fan, the band’s live performances are always amazing. When you go to a Pearl Jam show, expect 2-and-a-half to three hours of pulsating rock goodness. Loud, driving, and fantastic. Between Eddie Vedder’s soulful singing and the band’s thunderous playing…PJ is one of the best live bands around.
And while I enjoy hearing the mix of classic hits and deep tracks…I also love when Pearl Jam brings out a cover and pays homage to one of their musical heroes. In-person, I’ve seen them cover The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and The Who…among others. And every song is dynamite.
You can tell that Pearl Jam’s covers are done with real passion. They are giving a tribute to a rock legend from the past. I love it. So, without further ado, let’s get to the list…it’s Pearl Jam’s Top 5 Covers! And it starts…right now!
5.) “Mother” (Pink Floyd)
Eddie has performed with Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters on “Comfortably Numb” and it was awesome. But I think this cover of a Floyd classic from The Wall is really excellent. Eddie’s voice was made for this track.
4.) “Dock Of The Bay” (Otis Redding)
Otis Redding was one of the greatest singers of all time before a plane crash tragically took his life. Eddie has cited Redding as a hero of his…and this cover is great.
3.) “I Won’t Back Down” (Tom Petty)
Pearl Jam have always loved Tom Petty…as they’ve jammed with the late legend multiple times throughout their career. Here they are playing Petty’s iconic “I Won’t Back Down” in Denver in 2022.
2.) “Rockin’ In The Free World” (with Neil Young at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards)
One of the coolest covers ever…because it happened live on MTV when the channel actually meant something…it was a total surprise…and it featured the guy who wrote the song! This one was a home run!
1.) “Baba O’Riley” (The Who)
Eddie’s friendship and respect for The Who is well-known…and this cover of The Who’s epic single is a staple of many Pearl Jam shows. It completely rocks. Which is why it’s Number One on our list!
