AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – JULY 05: A seagull waits at the lunch spot at Warkworth town wharf on the Mahurangi River on July 05, 2024 in Auckland, New Zealand. New Zealand’s iconic red-billed seagulls are facing a dire conservation crisis, with some colonies experiencing population plummets of up to 90% over the past few decades. Experts warn that the country’s seagull population has dwindled to just 27,800 breeding pairs nationwide, a staggering decline that threatens the future of these ubiquitous coastal birds. The threats facing New Zealand’s seagulls are multifaceted – reduced fish stocks, loss of natural breeding grounds, and predation by invasive species have all contributed to the alarming drop in numbers, despite the birds’ reputation for being abundant nuisances. Conservationists say urgent action is needed to protect this integral part of the country’s marine ecosystem.

A bunch of us are no strangers to the beach, and we know once you pull out the food from the cooler, we get some unwanted friends stopping by. Those birds will fly right over your head to see what's on your menu to eat.
Jersey Man That Decapitates Seagull, What Police Say
According to police, 29-year-old Franklin Zeigler, of Cape May was with his daughter at Surfside Pier in Morey’s Piers & Beachfront Water Parks on July 6th.
A seagull had flown down and attempted to take french fries from his daughter. Likely in a fit of rage, according to the department, Zeigler caught the bird and then ripped its head off its body.
After the police arrived, he gave the cops a bad attitude and was uncooperative. Asa result of the investigation, Zeigler is being charged with third-degree animal cruelty, and also charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
He is scheduled to be back in court on August 9th. If convicted, third-degree animal cruelty is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a $15,000 fine
