The first time I listened to Reality Suite’s “Awaken” EP, the track “Cut, Burn, Bruise,” caught my attention. You simply cannot miss that killer guitar riff and memorable hook. It has a rad retro sound that gels perfectly with the the track’s overall composition. On the surface, it’s a great arena rock tune that could fit in just as easily in 2020 as it could in 1985. When you dig a little deeper and focus on the lyrics, it becomes something more. “Cut, Burn, Bruise,” is about lamenting the loss of a loved one. It’s a musical memorial, built on love and powered by Rock.
The song was co-written by Brian King and Darren Fisher of These Wolves. It’s easily one of my favorite songs; not only by Reality Suite, but of all the tracks I have reviewed since becoming the host of Jersey Rock. For that reason, I had to include it on 2018’s Jersey Rock Mixtape that we co-produced with our friends over at In The Clouds.
