(WATCH) Jersey Rock Video of the Week: Return To Earth “Deeper Into Me”
New EP “Octavius” Available Now!
Return To Earth’s return to producing music is a welcome re-invention that dials up the electronics, channels some rad retro vibes, and still maintains the Rock prowess the group was known for back in the 2000’s. After a long hiatus, the band released their “Oblivion” album in 2022. They followed it up with their latest release, the “Octavius” EP. The 4 song collection boasts a somewhat neo-80’s feel that perfectly balances bright neon with dark shadows. It’s available now on all streaming platforms. Speaking of the new release, singer Ron Scalzo said:
“I think we all had a little something left in the tank after our Oblivion album came out in 2022. That record really took a lot out of me as the band’s lyricist and singer — it was a literal sounding board for the gnarly experience I went thru during the pandemic, and even though I’m proud of the output — the rawness of my genuine screams and my guttural howls — the anger had gotten to me by the end of it. My exhaust pipes were empty and overheated.“
While “Oblivion” is a high-octane ride of power and anger, Octavius is a smooth stretch of synth-powered sensations. Scalzo said:
“On this new EP, we leaned into our synthwave sensibilities with intention to shed any sort of “metal” tag the band has earned throughout the years. We have nothing against the genre, obviously, but these new songs are mostly influenced by acts like Depeche Mode, M83 and Peter Gabriel.”
We were stoked to rock cuts from “Octavius” last week on Jersey Rock. While calling into the show, Ron Scalzo informed us of the band’s new lyric video for their track “Deeper Into Me.” Speaking of the single he said:
“It’s a different vibe for us… it flows into this bright Chris Pennie-written chorus. Chris and I are fans of bands like FM84 and Gunship, which is all Syngthwave stuff; all kinda like 80’s-tinged, neon-tinged and this song in particular is really more into that than anything else we’ve ever done before. I wouldn’t call it a departure as much as an evolution.”
