What To Do With Your Eclipse Glasses Now That You’re Done With Them?
Don't throw out yours! Here's how to recycle eclipse glasses.
What will you do with those solar eclipse glasses now that the eclipse is finished? Will you save them? Will you throw them out? Here’s an idea: your can recycle eclipse glasses so other people can use them! In fact, there’s a pretty cool charity that aims to collect eclipse glasses and get them in the hands of kids in poorer nations. Let’s hope you aren’t among this group of people who didn’t use them.
What Are Eclipse Glasses, Anyway?
These eclipse glasses, what makes them tick? On the surface, they just look like a pair of cheap movie theater 3-d glasses. There’s the paper frame, that’s kind of a universal thing. Usually the paper has a design or logo on it. But the part you look through is very different than what normal sunglasses are. In fact, that part you look through is nothing like the material that makes 3-d glasses work.
The part of the eclipse glasses that you look through are specially treated so you can look at without hurting your eyes. According to The Planetary Society, “Solar eclipse glasses use lenses that are made of black polymer, a flexible resin infused with carbon particles. They are about 100,000 times darker than ordinary sunglasses and block nearly all visible light as well as all infrared and ultraviolet light.”
That sounds like it would almost never break down in a landfill. But, no worries because you shouldn’t throw out your eclipse glasses. You could use them again during the next eclipse in Greenland and Iceland.
How To Recycle Eclipse Glasses
A big shout out the WRAT Facebook fans who pointed out this cool opportunity to help kids get their hands on these glasses. The group that is recycling eclipse glasses is called Astronomers Without Borders. You could choose to put together an event to collect the glasses, or you could choose to drop yours off at a participating location like the eyeglass retailer Warby Parker.
On the Jersey shore, Warby Parker has locations in Shrewsbury and Sea Girt.

We just love Asbury Park. The music, restaurants, shops, the boardwalk, and the people.
I love how welcoming Asbury Park is. If you’re a square peg or feel like a misfit thinking you’re not going to fit in, you’d be wrong.
Asbury Park is filled with colorful characters, all of whom have their own distinct quirks and personalities. I could walk into any shop and be greeted by someone from another state or another country. I love that.
For instance, I occasionally shop at one of the most darling shops in town, Heaven Gallery aka Heaven Art & Antiques at 721 Cookman Ave, run by a very interesting man named Malcolm. Malcolm often takes trips to South Africa, Morocco, Portugal, and other far away places in search of one-of-a-kind items to sell at his store in Asbury.
Every time I have been in his shop I overhear patron’s conversations about how beautiful and unique the store is. I say that every time I walk in the door.
You can’t help but be filled with positivity and joy when Malcolm greets you and shows you his latest finds from his travels around the globe. I can’t tell you how many unique pieces of jewelry I’ve purchased from him.
Asbury has such an eclectic scene, and no matter where you wind up, there’s music.
