Let’s Head To The Jersey Shore In Pennsylvania
Here’s How You Can Enjoy The Jersey Shore In Pennsylvania You’re probably scratching your head and saying to yourself, “Robyn, are you crazy?”
No, I’m not crazy…ok maybe a little. In this instance I’m telling you the truth…kind of.
While I was flipping through the channels on TV, I came across a program where a man was talking about the Jersey Shore in Pennsylvania. I think it was around 3:00am when I woke up out of a dead sleep and the TV was still on. I grabbed the remote and started changing the channel and boom, I see this guy is talking about a place called Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania.
Of course I had to investigate this new piece of information because I live and work by the Jersey Shore in the Garden State.
Where Is Jersey Shore In Pennsylvania?
Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania is a borough in Lycoming County in Central Pennsylvania with a population of about 114,000 people. It’s about 130 miles Northwest of Philadelphia and about 160 miles East-Northeast of Pittsburgh.
Pennsylvania’s Jersey Shore doesn’t have long stretches of boardwalk or even a beach. In fact, it’s about 250 miles from New Jersey’s Jersey Shore.
How Did Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania Get Its Name?
So, how did Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania get its name? Has the Keystone state been pulling a fast one on unsuspecting tourists for a couple of centuries?
According to pahomepage.com, Jim Allen from the Jersey Shore Historical Society says it all starts with an 18th century feud spanning the Susquehanna River.
“Jersey shore was originally named Waynesburg by the two brothers Rueben and Jeremiah Manning who laid out the town in 1785,” says Allen.” Around the time that this was happening, a settlement was rising on the eastern side.”
Those two brothers came from New Jersey. Everyone on the eastern side would tease the Jersey folks, calling their side of the river the “Jersey Shore.” The moniker was used so often that in 1826, the joke became reality.
“The original name of Waynesburg was officially abandoned and changed to Jersey Shore,” says Allen.

Those little scam artists. Believe it or not, many people have been fooled by the name. People have shown up at the local Inn and after checking into their room, they ask the clerk where the beach and boardwalk are. Then he lays it on them and tells them, there’s no beach or boardwalk anywhere near Jersey Shore.
I say to these people, “Google is your friend.” I may take a ride there someday to check out the area. After all, that area has mountains, tubing down the river, parks, waterfalls, and a few restaurants serving hearty homey meals and delicious baked goods.
