Yes, the calendar turns to February next week. Meanwhile, die hard baseball fans rejoice as the reporting of Major League pitchers and catchers to Spring Training is not too far off. Here in New Jersey we have more than our share of fantastic Minor League Baseball. All teams have exciting games, and somewhat whacky promotions during the season. However, one of the more popular Minor League squads in the state, have come up with a season long promotion that is not only original, it’s a classic!
The Patriots Will Become The Diners!
The Somerset Patriots Minor League Baseball Team will gain an alter ego for select games this season, when they roll out their new uniforms and persona as The Jersey Diners! According to a press release, on Tuesday morning, the Somerset Patriots visited a New Jersey diner to announce that they’re serving up a new alternate identity as The Jersey Diners. Furthermore, the press release went on to say, the central New Jersey-based Patriots have been the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate since 2021. Interestingly, they are located in the middle of a gleaming, pre-fabricated and neon-drenched culinary wonderland. The idea to create a Jersey Diners alternate identity. The Patriots will assume this identity for three home games this coming season. The idea came about following a larger brainstorm regarding Garden State-based food monikers, including pizza.
They almost called themselves the Greasy Spoons!
The name the Greasy Spoons was at one point considered as a possible name. However, it was ultimately decided to keep it simple and celebratory. The Jersey Diners wordmark is spelled out in what the team describes as “pink poodle” neon. It is situated within a “stainless silver” approximation of one of the state’s classic boxcar-style diners. The logo on the cap is a smiling cup of coffee, decked out in the bow tie and paper hat regalia of a diner employee.
The Jersey Diners logos were designed by Ryan Foose of Fooser Studios. Moreover, they are complemented by a variety of secondary marks. These include a coffee pot embossed with an stylized “J” and “d” (for Jersey Diners). A stack of pancakes topped with a baseball-shaped slab of butter. Plus, a “State and Eggs” mark featuring a Jersey-shaped cut of breakfast sirloin. The “Happy Waitress” logo, meanwhile, is named after a Jersey diner staple. It’s a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon and tomato! Furthermore, the Happy Waitress will be among some of the ballpark’s “blue plate specials”. These will only be available when the Patriots play as the Diners. There will also be the legendary gravy and cheese-topped gut-buster known as Disco Fries.
The Patriots will make their Jersey Diners debut at TD Bank Ballpark in short order, hosting the Hartford Yard Goats on June 8.
