Reader’s Digest Names This Ocean County Pizza The Best In New Jersey
Reader’s Digest crowned one Ocean County Pizza place, The Best Pizza In New Jersey.
They claimed to have done the detective work to find the best pizza in every state using a combination of local knowledge, sales figures, rave reviews, and simply following their noses.
I wonder if any of the people involved are actually from New Jersey? It doesn’t really matter because pizza tastes are subjective no matter where you’re from.
The place that was chosen was given a score of 8.9 by El Presidente, Dave Portnoy when he visited this favorite Jersey joint.
What Really Makes The Best Pizza Taste So Good?
Some people believe the sauce is what makes the pizza. Others believe it’s the quality of the crust/dough. I’ve even come across a few people who think the cheese is the magic ingredient that makes pizza shine.
I believe it’s a combination of things that make pizza great. In my opinion, the sauce and the crust are the most important ingredients that determine what makes this popular food great. I’ll add that the cooking method makes a difference as well.
According to pizzauniversity.org, there are 8 steps on how to identify a good pizza.
Number 1 on the list is:
Crust and border– First look at the crust and the border of the pizza. If it contains a lot of air – it will be light, crisp and good. If it is full of dough and heavy, however, it means that the pizza has not been leavened properly.
#2 Balance – the ratio of tomato and mozzarella, or toppings on the pizza in general, is very important. The toppings should complement the base of the pizza. The dough is not just a blank canvas…it is the foundation of the pizza. If it is not good, there is no topping that can redeem it. The toppings should enhance the base and harmonize perfectly with it – without taking over the show. Too many toppings on a pizza are not a good thing.

Now it’s time to reveal Reader’s Digest’ s pick for the Best Pizza in New Jersey.
The winner is: BROOKLYN SQUARE at 265 S New Prospect Rd, Jackson Township, NJ 08527

Check out what Reader’s Digest had to say about our beloved local pizza joint:
“Time to get a little saucy with this Jackson pizza joint’s best-seller, the Upside Down Square, a Sicilian-style pie absolutely dripping with chunky tomato sauce atop a pillowy crust. Said sauce is a recipe passed down from the owner’s Italian grandmother and made with hand-crushed tomatoes for a blend that is not too sweet, not too sour, and totally tasty.”
Many locals will agree that Brooklyn Square is one of the absolute best in the state.
You can find other Brooklyn Square locations in Toms River on Hinds Road, and another in Manalapan on Wilson Avenue.
