Well, I guess we’ve come full circle of sorts…I started playing Rat Rock in the 90s and now I’ve put together an hour-long segment in my afternoon drive show called 90’s Palooza, featuring, you guessed it 90’S ROCK!

But this will be a little different, as along with the 90’s staples you are used to hearing on the Rat, we will deep dive into the past with 90’s Nuggets, songs we played back then that you might not have heard in a year or 20! So get your Doc Martin’s laced up, throw on that Flannel, and watch some Clerks this weekend my friend because every Monday afternoon at 6 pm…we go back to the 90s! With 90’s Palooza!

6 Rock Bands and the Stories of Their First Gigs

Even though these bands have gone on to perform in front of massive crowds, every band had to start somewhere.

Yes, never forget that even the most popular bands in the world have humble beginnings. More often than not, these acts played in half-empty rooms in front of just a handful of people. Those people were likely friends or family. Worse, many of these bands would likely tell you some of their early shows were in front of even less than that.

However, it’s in those moments where bands often remember how those very first shows really allowed them to cut their teeth. They helped bands realize their performance style and truly craft who they were. If you were among the lucky few who saw a band in a tiny venue before they blew up, those shows are often a badge of honor for the fan. There is something so special about seeing a band from its early beginnings grow into something grand before your eyes. There’s a good chance that whoever was at these gigs, those people talk about them fondly and with pride.

The bands highlighted in this list cover a unique swath of rock history. Three of them have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It wouldn’t be outrageous for the other three bands to be inducted one day, either. The dates of these first shows span took place in the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. The youngest band on our list had their first show in 1997 when the founding members were 13 and 10, respectively. This band literally had their dad play their show with them. Now, they play arenas

With this in mind, here are six bands and the main details about their first gigs. Some of them will undoubtedly surprise you.

Believe it or not, Jimmy’s first job was overnights at a Christian Radio Station. He claims he got into radio because like Rocky Balboa once said, “cause I can’t sing or dance.” Jimmy loves to write about all local happenings, especially around his town of Toms River. Favorite Pastime (other than masturbation, of course): Cheering for the Yankees, and crying for the J-E-T-S!!! Favorite Food: Hot Sauce…I collect ’em! Favorite Drink: PRUNO…look it up, if you dare! Favorite Movies: The Exorcist, Planet of The Apes (the original), To Kill a Mockingbird, Annie Hall, and of course GF 1 & GF 2…I heard that’s how the real fans refer to them. Favorite Movie Line: easy…Murry-Caddyshack-“big hitter, the Lama”…f#$*in’ riot! Best Rat Rock Bands: STP, VH, ZEP, PEARL JAM, FOOS, PEPPERS,AC/DC Favorite New Bands: Glorious Sons, Rival Sons, Dirty Honey Most Embarrassing Moment: the moment my mother reads this shit! Best Day: I know a lot of folks say this, but it’s true: the day my little girl Jynell and my boy Big D were born! Next to that, it would have to be the day I was baked on earth day in Central Park and met Keefer Sutherland…baked too, I believe.
