If you're from the Jersey Shore, Miss Liberty is as common as pork roll. Well, Miss Liberty now needs the Jersey Shore community's help.
According to an organized GoFundMe page Miss Liberty is suffering from Stage 4 cancer and is reaching out for help battling the disease.
The website blog states in part, "Sondra Fortunato, otherwise known as Miss Liberty USA, has been a fixture in the Jersey Shore for decades. She is known as a long-time fixture in parades, graduations, and charity events. This former playboy bunny, model, and media personality has accumulated friends all over the world. She has also unfortunately developed Stage 4 cancer, which has destroyed her left eye and threatens her life. The expenses associated with her treatment have resulted in the loss of her home. She still needs more surgery to treat this very serious illness. If you've ever gotten a smile out of Sondra or her trademark sticker-covered car, any little bit would let her know that she has not been forgotten."
You can donate to the GoFundMe, organized by Miss Fortunato herself, here.
A fixture in Toms River.
Furthermore, if you live in Toms River especially, you know Miss Liberty. No matter your age, you've seen her. Also, if you are old enough, she's somewhat of a self-made legend. From her wedding-type gowns to her tiara, to her car...Oh, that car!
In its heyday it was adorned with so many signs, you had to wonder how a driver could even see out of the driver's side window! She was at the Shop Rite, at your favorite Italian restaurant, and at every event or parade in town.
Moreover, she may belong to all of the USA and more specifically the Jersey Shore, however, Miss Liberty is Toms River through and through. With that said, if you can find it in your heart to help this sweet, eccentric lady out, please donate. Cancer sucks. However, we can do our part to help our friends in the community beat it, one donation at a time.
Good Luck Miss Liberty!
Pubs and Taverns are as much a part of the Jersey Shore as Boardwalks and Pork Roll. In fact, did you know that there are at least 4 of these establishments that have been in business for over 100 years ? It's true!
Add in a few more that are closing in a their century mark and you have some real hoppy history here at the Jersey Shore. One of the places on this list opened 20 years BEFORE the Civil War!
Now that obviously cannot compare to the Revolutionary War grandeur of the one and only Moore's Tavern in Freehold. So we must honor that king of the taverns first, before we can move on. I believe I read on their website https://www.moorestavern.com/about/ that the year was 1787 when they first were granted a license to operate continuously as a tavern. Dang!
As we move on from Moore's, we highlight places that are still serving up tavern grog and pub grub after all these years. All are in Monmouth County. However, will be sure to do a list of Ocean County establishments soon, While the OC's pub history may not be quite as long and storied, I'm sure I can find a few old time treasures to share.
One thing is for sure, and that is we are lucky to have these great old places with so much history in their walls. Boy, if those walls could talk too! Slante'!
