Hey you! New Jersey toll evaders beware! The man is coming for you and your fake tags and blown toll booths. A series of new bills signed by Governor Phil Murphy are meant to crack down on repeat toll offenders. According to News 12 New Jersey, officials estimate toll evaders cost New Jersey toll authorities over $100 million in 2022. Murphy says the bills aim to put the state on a higher platform to address the issue. Furthermore, The new laws would tighten security of temporary tags, while cracking down on fakes sold by dealers. The laws will also set up an appeals process for repeat offenders.

Up Until Now, There Have Been Limited Courses Of Action Taken.

According to officials, prior to these new laws being passed, only the Turnpike Authority had the option to ask the Motor Vehicle Commission to suspend a driver's vehicle registration privilege.

Now, the New Jersey Department of Transportation can work with the Motor Vehicle Commission to suspend chronic violators no matter the toll road. Moreover, the new laws will make transactions a 4th degree crime. Meanwhile, possession of a fake tag will now carry a disorderly persons offense. Officials say they hope the new laws allow tolling agencies to have greater support from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

In The End It All Comes Down To Revenue.

Of course this is New Jersey, and there's always an angle. As previously mentioned, the toll authorities estimated 100 million dollars lost to blown tolls in 2022. To that end, officials say that part of the goal is to make up for that lost revenue. So it's not just to stop future violations. However, they did go on to point out that the new laws are also set up to provide an opportunity for a fair appeals process for any unjustified violations. Meanwhile, you may remember Carl Craft's recent story on congestion pricing, and how it may cost us not violators 30 bucks to drive into NYC.
