Bob's Discount Furniture will open its first location in Ocean County later this year when it opens in the spot formerly occupied by Gelcos Furniture.
There is construction fencing on the parameter of the former unpainted furniture store at 1288 Hooper Avenue. Up until now the only clue as to what would become of Gelco, a fixture in town for decades, was a sign that reads "New Retail Coming Soon."

Bob's Discount Furniture has 13 locations in New Jersey. However the Freehold store location, near the Freehold Raceway Mall is currently it's only Monmouth County locale. As previously mentioned, this Toms River Bob, would also be the first in Ocean County. According to Wikipedia, Bob's Discount Furniture is an American furniture store chain headquartered in Manchester Connecticut. The company opened its first store in 1991 in Newington, Connecticut. Bob's currently ranks 12th in sales among US furniture stores. As of March 2022, the company has 150 stores in 24 US states, from the Northeast to the West Coast.
Furthermore, the story goes that owner Bob Kaufman was injured in a motorcycle accident in 1976. He found the recuperating powers of water beds to be unmatched! So, he started selling them. After water bed sales dwindled in the 1990's, Bob partnered up with Gene Rosenberg, a wholesale furniture dealer, and the rest is history!
Of course, if you know Bob's silly commercials with "Little Bob". However, did you know Bob's Discount Furniture donates over $2.75 million per year to charitable causes through two initiatives? First, there's the Bob’s Discount Furniture Charitable Foundation. Plus, there is the Bob’s Outreach program. Through these efforts, the company has supported March Of Dimes, Autism Speaks, the Special Olympics and other charities. Moreover, Bobs has also been recognized by the American Red Cross for its financial contributions and sponsored blood drives. In fact, some are in partnership with teams like the New York Giants.
A spokesperson for Bob's has confirmed the new store will be opening in the future on Hooper Avenue, but gave no definitive timeline.
