A Tale Of Two Jersey Shore Boardwalks

The many vibes of the Jersey shore boardwalk on view in the summer of 2024.
wratWhen it comes to the New Jersey shore nothing compares to the boardwalk experience. The Jersey shore boardwalk is the hallmark experience of many Jersey shore towns. We're only one week in to the summer of 2024 and we already have two major storylines wrapping their way through this quintessential experience.
The Jersey Shore Boardwalk
The vibe begins early each summer morning with the morning walkers and runners. They're starting their day with the ocean air and the sunrise; and they're taking that positive vibe through their day. The boardwalk beacons the daytime visitor who traverses it on the way to their place in the sand. Evening time brings the lovers, hand in hand.

Some Jersey shore boardwalks are popping with the excitement of arcade games, the smell of funnel cake and the sound of thrill rides. Other boardwalks have none of that; their sole draw is the sea air and solitude. In the summer of 2024, two boardwalk stories have emerged.
Ocean Grove Beach Access
Sunday morning beach access was permitted in Ocean Grove. For the uninitiated this may seem like no big deal. However, it's the first time in over 150 years that Sunday morning beach access was permitted in Ocean Grove. Up until last Sunday, the religious group that owns and controls Ocean Grove beach access did not allow people to access the beach on Sunday mornings for (their) religious reasons.

Ocean Grove beach access temporarily allowed on Sunday morning.
That group, the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, has temporarily allowed beach access on Sunday mornings because the state of New Jersey was going to drop massive fines on them if they didn't. They are awaiting a ruling to decide if the Sunday morning beach access will continue.
Meanwhile, Other Jersey Shore Boardwalks Close
While boardwalk beach access opened for the first time in generations in Ocean Grove, further south boardwalks closed or became limited due to violence.
In Toms River authorities imposed a curfew on youths in town, specifically on the barrier island towns. Unruly crowds caused security issues for Tom River police leading them to impose a curfew on anyone younger than 18. The curfew is in effect from 10pm to 5am. A few exemptions will be allowed. Curfews on the Toms River towns on the barrier island have happened in the past, but rarely this early in the summer. Important to note that social media reports of gunfire on the boardwalk in Seaside were not confirmed by Toms River police.

The calm before the storm. Multiple incidents caused Wildwood, New Jersey police to limit boardwalk access and declare "state of emergency".
The popular Jersey shore destination of Wildwood had so many problems with crowd control that they imposed a "state of emergency" and actually limited boardwalk access to the Wildwood boardwalk. Wildwood police described the problems as "numerous incidents of civil unrest".
"These measures were necessary to ensure public safety and maintain law and order within our jurisdiction. As of this time the state of emergency has been rescinded and we thank everyone for their cooperation."
A Tale Of Two Boardwalks
From gaining beach access in one sleepy Monmouth County Jersey shore town to a near riot closing boardwalk access in another community, the differences in Jersey shore boardwalks couldn't be more different.
Things We Love: Sandy Hook
It's not a secret. The tippy top of the Jersey Shore is a pretty spectacular place. There's so much to do at Sandy Hook.
Fishing, surfing, running, biking, sail boarding, exploring history, wild life watching and even going "full monte" at the only beach north of Florida where you can fully naked!
Today, we're saluting this great treasure of the Jersey shore that puts a magnificent end to the Bay Shore beach areas along the Raritan and Sandy Hook Bays and starts the 130+ mile north to south stretch of Atlantic coast down to Cape May. Sandy Hook, we love it!
We were fortunate to have a lot of our friends on social media contribute images to our collection. Others are contributed by the National Park Service! More pictures will be added as we receive them and process them.

Fishing off the Sandy Hook Atlantic Ocean side and the bay side is a popular and fun thing to do.

There's plenty of wild life on Sandy Hook if you're patient enough to find it.

Sail boarding is very popular on the bay side as the ocean breezes provide plenty of wind power while the bay is just calm enough to enjoy the ride and "catch some air".

The bay side of Sandy Hook Bay is a great spot to catch a sunset.
SurferNPG

We're not telling where this secret surf spot is. You'll have to do your own research.

The bike path crosses over to the bay side and runs between Sandy Hook Bay and the old officers quarters, so of which are being rebuilt.

A baby plover checking out the area. The beaches are a protected nesting spot for these interesting birds.

There's lots of places on Sandy Hook where the locals know the surf kicks in. New Jersey has lost the reputation of being "lame" for surfing thanks to our fall and winter seasons.
Sunset Dana E

Interesting pic from our Facebook friend Dana because you can get an amazing sunrise and an amazing sunset - both over the water - at Sandy Hook.

Our Facebook friend Rich sent in this picture clearing showing the base honoring someone important to our nation.

Jenny caught this pic of the officers quarters viewed through one of the rock walls. Neat!

If you're interested at all in American history or military history, Sandy Hook is certainly a place to check out.
Beach Erin R

Our Facebook friend Erin has captured a great beach scene: empty beach stretching forever. Off in the distance is the Manhattan skyline.
Top of Lighthouse. Michael Gironda

Our friend Mike took this pic from the top of the lighthouse. Great view of the Manhattan skyline. Hard to imagine 8 million people on that island!

There's even a part of Sandy Hook beach that allows nude sunbathing! The fans of "Gunnison Beach" drive for hours to be there.
