Police are currently conducting an investigation following a drowning at Spring Lake Beach this past Saturday.
The local police say they were called to St. Clair Avenue, for a man who was found in the ocean face down just around 2 pm.
According to the Spring Lake Police Department, the 23-year-old was from Essex County in the town of Belleville. His name was not released, pending the notification of his family.
The Scene At Spring Lake Beach
The help of other towns first responders, such as Spring Lake Heights, Belmar, and Sea Girt Police, the Spring Lake First Aid Squad, and Spring Lake Fire Department, all tried to do life-saving techniques, according to police.
The unidentified man was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, and sad to say he passed away, police said.
The local lifeguards were not on duty but a couple of them were there to see how they could help out.
The lifeguards do not start watching the ocean, until the kickoff of summer on Memorial Day weekend. Keep in mind as well, and check your local beaches where you go when they do start.
Some reports are saying most towns will not have beaches with lifeguards daily until mid-June. Please be extra careful out there in the ocean.
I have done a bunch of polar plunges down here at the Jersey Shore and had a lifeguard watching us, and even this time of the year the water is still cold. Moreover, you should be in the ocean when someone is watching you and keeping an eye out.
Make sure you let a friend or family member know where you are going out to swim and check with your local lifeguards on rip currents, tides, and where to stay safe to be in the ocean.
