Silverton Speedway Update
Since my last story earlier this week about the potential closing of the beloved Silverton Speedway gas station at 1879 Hooper Avenue in Toms River, a couple of new developments have emerged.
It appears the drop dead date for the closure of the gas station and convenience store will indeed be this coming Monday, March 27th.
However, in an almost unbelievable scenario, one of the senior attendants I spoke with told me the renovations are expected to begin immediately, the following day. Furthermore, after only
an anticipated one-day closure, the pumps, and the convenience store are now slated to be opened on Wednesday, March 29th!
One would think a makeover of this size and speed would be left to one of those home renovation shows on cable! Meanwhile, the latest intel confirms it will be a Citgo gas station with a Kosher convenience store.
Furthermore, one other bit of new information I was able to obtain was that at least some of the current Silverton Speedway workers are being reassigned to other Speedways in the area. The attendant I spoke to most recently informed me he will be moving to the Manasquan location on Route 70, near routes 34 and 35. This is at least some comforting news to those of us that worried about the future well-being of these soon-to-be displaced workers, who have become an integral part of our weekly lives.
Lastly, the clock is ticking on the Silverton Speedway. However, a new day is dawning for the community, and with little to no interruption to service, if we are to believe the info given.
We shall see, fellow Silvertonians, we shall see.
