Silverton Speedway Closing For Good!
My simple Sunday trip to get gas was interrupted in a most abrupt fashion yesterday.
The attendant who I am familiar with just from seeing him a on a regular basis when filling up, informed me that this will be the last week for Speedway! The station, located at 1879 Hooper Avenue in the Silverton section, has been a staple of the community since taking over from Hess a number of years ago. You may have heard last year a deal was reached with 7-11 and Speedway to have 7-11 products sold inside some Speedway stores in the area, including the Silverton shop. However, according to my contact, the new venture opening will have nothing to do with Speedway or 7-11.
Hello Citgo?
The attendant informed me that after this week, the Speedway will close, and renovations will begin. I’m told the new gas station will be a Citgo. Now, I don’t know about you, but I cannot for the life of me remember the last time I visited Citgo. I didn’t even know they were still pumping gas. However, I did some research and found there are Citgo stations in the area. Little Silver, Hazlet, and Manalapan all have Citgo gas stations in their respective Monmouth County towns. Furthermore, there is a Citgo marine gas station at 287 Brennan Concourse in Bayville, here in Ocean County.
What about the Convenience Store?
The Speedway attendant informed me he had been told when the new Citgo does open, presumably later this spring/summer, that there will be a Kosher convenience store opening with it. Again, while I do not have secondary verification about this, a Kosher establishment does seem to make sense, given the growing Hasidic population in the area. Furthermore, the attendant, who asked not to be identified, stated he personally had not been informed if the sale would impact his future employment at the new establishment, only that he was told the last day of the Silverton Speedway would be this coming weekend.
