About Historic Allaire Village.
The Historic Village at Allaire is a non-profit, living history museum, located in Farmingdale, New Jersey. Through the dedication of Allaire’s visitors, volunteers, and staff, whose goal is keeping history alive through events, fundraisers, reenactments, etc.
According to the Allaire Village website, the Historic Village at Allaire was once an iron-producing, factory town known as the Howell Iron Works, Co. The Village itself was a self-sufficient community containing a carpentry and pattern-making shop. There was also a blacksmith shop, a bakery, and a boarding house. Furthermore, the village had a blast furnace, mills to finish iron products, a school, a church, a general store with a post office, as well as workers’ homes.
Moreover, iron produced at the village was shipped to New York City by wagon and steamship. It was used to produce steam engine parts in a factory also owned by our proprietor, James P. Allaire. The Howell Iron Works speaks to the experiences of the economic and social changes of early Industrial America. Today the Historic Village at Allaire is an interactive museum where visitors can experience history directly through hands-on activities.
In fact, check out this video of one of the villagers demonstrating how iron was forged and used, along with wood, in carpentry.
