Dryuary, We’re In The Home Stretch
Heading into the final weekend of Dry January and it really feels like we’re in the home stretch now! If this was your first Dryuary or tenth, good on ya. I’ll take this one step further: Today I want to give credit to my crew who started the month with great intentions but broke the seal early. I get it, it ain’t easy.
If you’re just hearing these words for the first time (and honestly, at this point, I find that hard to believe because “low-alcohol living” seems to be everywhere this January), Dryuary is when those of us who enjoy a cocktail or two – a glass of red or white – or a taste of the local craft beer scene – take a break and hit the reset button on adult beverages for a month. I’ve been doing it for almost a decade and I know my brain and body enjoy the break from the booze. The whole experience gives me the confidence to roll into the rest of the year with a much better approach to being a booze-hound; or less of one.
Dry January has all kinds of different challenges to try to derail you from the effort. It’s not like there’s less stress in January. Heck no, there’s probably more. The cold weather doesn’t help. The fact that it gets dark 20 minutes after you finish lunch doesn’t help. the holiday credit card bill shows up. And the kids? The are stark raving lunatics who seem to know that you’re doing a booze-free challenge and are more than willing to push your buttons. All those factors combine for what would normally be a tasty beverage to let off some steam at the end of the day. But, here we are. Drinking tea.
What If You Dropped Out Of Dry January?
So, the joke that everyone hit’s me with when I tell them that I’ll “just have a water” during the month of January is: “No one likes a quitter, Carl”. Hah Hah.
You know what? You do you. I’ll do me. That’s where my head lays now. So I have this quick message for you if you started Dryuary but gave in after a few days or weeks. I get ya. For all the reasons I listed and more, I understand. Just because you set a goal and didn’t get there doesn’t mean you’re out of the game completely. I don’t start riding up a hill on my mountain bike only to never try again if I don’t make it.
Take this with ya: You can always try again. Maybe February is a better month for you. Why? Well, it’s a shorter month for starters! Maybe you set the goalposts a little closer, maybe it’s a, “Dry after the Big amel” goal. You could try to go dry from the Monday after, until the beginning of the St. Ratrick’s party season (the Belmar St. Patrick’s Day Parade is on March 3rd this year). My friend Veronica does a “Sober-tober” (dry October) instead of a Dry January. Maybe that’s more your style.
No matter what, thanks for being on the Dryuary journey in 2024. I hope to see you out on the trail next year! Or sooner!
