22-Year-Old Eats Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich for FIRST Time Ever!
April 2nd is National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day! According to nationaldaycalendar.com, most Americans eat over 2,000 pb&js by the time they graduate high school! It’s a classic that everyone had growing up and might even enjoy well into adulthood. Well…almost everyone. In honor of the “holiday” I have a confession to make: I have never had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich! You might be asking “how is this possible? You said yourself it was a staple food growing up”. I still brought peanut butter sandwiches to school lunch; I just never added jelly. Something about jelly always seemed gross to me. I don’t know if it’s the texture or the sweetness of it, but I never wanted it on my sandwich. And it’s not just me, my sisters also passed on jelly on their sandwiches, but we all love peanut butter!
Most of you know our Promotions Coordinator, Atomic Rob, for his obsession with hot sauce. Well, turns out he is also a peanut butter and jelly connoisseur. This guy brings a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in for lunch at least three times a week. Needless to say, when he heard I had never had one, he was shocked and a little disappointed. Word spread around the office as if they’d heard the most shocking news of their lives!
Jimmy Steal went into investigation mode asking questions trying to figure out why I had never had one of the most popular sandwiches. I told him what I mentioned before about the texture + sweetness, and that I also never had jelly on toast. Something about jelly gives me the ick. Rob’s biggest question (and concern) was “isn’t the sandwich too dry with just peanut butter and bread,” but honestly, I have never had an issue. They were having none of it and decided that, after 22 years of life, I finally need to try a true peanut butter and jelly sandwich! (PS: for those wondering, I am a smooth peanut butter girl, not crunchy – but that’s a debate for another day!)
Rob, being the pb&j “expert”, brought the bread, peanut butter, and jelly into the office and started making sandwiches for everyone. I gotta say, watching him make it got me a little scared because he was loading that sandwich up. The jelly was leaking out before I even touched the sandwich! He claims that’s the way you have to make it: a ton of peanut butter and a ton of jelly. (The entire office did not completely agree on this, but onward we went with the experiment.) Seriously, I like peanut butter and I still don’t know if I want a ton of it leaking out of my sandwich.
Everyone gathered around to witness this “historic” moment. I took my first bite and I hate to say, but it wasn’t the reaction they were expecting. I didn’t love it. I guess I just really don’t like jelly. And the fact that it was dripping out of the sandwich like clotted BLOOD didn’t help either. I rated it a 5/10 – right down the middle because it wasn’t the worst thing I’ve had, but I wouldn’t have it again.
Even though I won’t be celebrating National Peanut Butter and Jelly day, maybe this got you hungry for your own sandwich. From now on I’ll be sticking to my peanut butter and bread sandwiches. Maybe I should start a national holiday for that!
