The Morning Rat Race

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 08: New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman speaks to the media prior to the start of the game against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium on April 08, 2022 in New York City. (Photo by Mike Stobe/Getty Images)

Good morning, ladies and gentleman.   It’s Davey Mac here and I’m trying to be calm this morning.   I don’t want Yankee General Manager Brian Cashman to once again ruin my day.   I’m breathing in and out deeply.   I’m just trying to—

—Screw it!   I can’t hold back!   Brian Cashman is destroying what little joy I have left on the Planet Earth!   With former, inept, New York Giants GM Dave Gettleman getting the ax a few months months ago…Brian Cashman is officially the worst GM in New York and possibly the worst GM in Sports!

The Yanks have not won the World Series since 2009 and the blame can be put squarely at Brian Cashman’s feet.   His refusal to go after (or at least convince Hal Steinbrenner to sign) big-time, superstar, free agents is embarrassing.   Since the 1970’s, the Yankees build their championship teams with a combination of great young players of their own and huge stars…until this recent run.

Instead, Cashman signs pitchers like Frankie Montas from the Oakland A’s.   Every Yankee fan, including myself, was begging for a megastar hitter like Juan Castro and instead we mysteriously wind up with this bum.   Montas is 4 and 11 for the season (splitting his time with Oakland and the Yankees)…and he has ZERO wins (while giving up 20 runs) in his first five games with the team.   HE STINKS.

It’s a disturbing pattern that we’re seeing where it seems that Brian Cashman believes that he’s outsmarted baseball.   He’s always wanting to impress people by finding that diamond-in-the-rough or aged player who may have something to give.   Yes, sometimes those guys pan out.   More often…they do NOT.

That’s why superstars are superstars.   They consistently put up numbers and you don’t have to speculate as to what you’re getting with their production.   We knew that Juan Castro would hit.   We knew that Bryce Harper would hit.   We knew that Manny Machado would hit.   These were/all superstars who wanted to come to the Yankees…and Cashman ignored them to save money.

That, my friends, is BAD BUSINESS.   The New York market is number one for a reason.   It’s the toughest market in America to be successful in.   And you gotta spend money to make money.   George Steinbrenner understood that.   Brian Cashman SIMPLY DOES NOT.

Lastly…in my opinion…Brian Cashman looks like a ferret.   Now I’m not calling ferrets bad.   But they don’t look very trustworthy.   And neither is Brian Cashman.   He has lost the trust of the Yankee fans.   Like me.

This has been Davey Mac…a disgruntled and tortured Yankee fan…thanks for letting me share.

  • Judge Hits #50 But Yanks Still Lose

Let’s start with baseball…where once again the Yankees are playing crappy baseball.   Despite Aaron Judge hitting his 50th home run of the season…the Yanks still managed to the Angels…4 to 3.   Keep in mind, the Angels are 17 games under .500 at 56 and 73…but new Yankee pitcher who STINKS, Frankie Montas, pitched six innings and gave up three home runs to the Angels…he receives the loss.   Montas is now 4 and 11 with a rising ERA that is up to 3.94.   A horrendous acquisition by Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman.   In fact, Montas is just the 2nd pitcher in Yankees history to allow 20+ ER and have 0 wins in his first 5 games with the franchise.   AWFUL.   The Yanks are still 78 and 51…but their once GIGANTIC lead in the A.L. East is now only seven games in front of the Tampa Bay Rays.   The Toronto Blue Jays trial the Yankees by eight games.   At least the Yanks have Judge…who by hitting his 50th homer last night…is back on pace to tie Roger Maris at 61 home runs for the season…which would be a Yankee and American League record.

  • Pujols Going For 700

Staying with baseball for a second…legendary baseball St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols is also chasing history (just like Judge).   Pujols slugged his 694th home run yesterday as he tries to become just the fourth player with 700 home runs.  It also was off the 450th different pitcher…which is a Major League record.

Football.   Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49’ers have reportedly agreed to a restructured one-year contract that is worth $6.5 million in guaranteed money.   The 49’ers have also given Garappolo nine million dollars in incentives…depending on how much and how well he plays.

  • Barrett May Get Extension With Knicks

Basketball.   Word on the street is that R.J. Barrett and the Knicks are in the midst of finalizing a four-year contract extension that could be worth up to $120 million.   According to some NBA experts, this may also mean that the Knicks are OUT on pursuing Utah Jazz All Star Guard and New York native Donovan Mitchell.

  • Serena Wins First Round Match In Last U.S. Open

Tennis.   Last night began the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York City.   Of course, the U.S. Open is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments and it’ll also be the final tournament that Serena Williams ever plays.   Serena had her first match of the tournament last night and she beat Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in straight sets…6 -3…6-3…as Serena advances in the tournament.   Afterwards, there was a big ceremony to honor Serena…who has won 23 singles Grand Slam titles…more than any woman in tennis history.   Congrats, Serena, and good luck!
