What You Need To Know About A New Text Scam Targeting Venmo Users
I almost fell for this new text scam targeting Venmo users the other day, so I thought I’d share the picture so you can be warned.
I was going about my busy day when this semi-official text message came my way. These days were all spread into a hundred different directions at once. My distraction level was high. It’s easy to fall for scams like this. But my “scam Spidey senses” still detected the potential BS anyway.
I snapped this screen grab of the text scam targeting Venmo users:
There are a bunch of things that made me think twice about clicking the link in the text.
First, I hadn’t used Venmo that day. This came totally out of the blue.
Second, the intro line of, “Venmo here!” just didn’t seem appropriate. I get that sometimes companies use copy points that seem friendly or approachable but this was too friendly for a financial institution.
Third, what nearly tricked me was that the copy also included a line that nearly all banks use when they’re texting me a code for dual verification. The line, “never share this code” is common when a company uses dual verification. The fact that this scammer used that copy was pretty tricky.
What Should You Do If You Get This Text Scam?
Well, the first thing you should do is NOT click the link. I guarantee that this particular link is the first step in stealing your login credentials for Venmo and the first step towards some a-hole draining any bank account that you have linked to Venmo.
After NOT clicking the link, delete the text. If the option is available report the text as spam or phishing. Some phones allow that option when deleting a text.
And following all that, go check out your Venmo account to be sure that everything looks legit. Check the accounts that are linked to your Venmo too, just to be sure that you didn’t get trapped by this new text scam targeting Venmo users.
