6 New Jersey Gas Stations With The Best Food. There is such a thing!

We’re not talking about gas station sushi, we’re not just focusing on gas station snacks, we’re talking about actual food from a gas station.

According to a recent national poll in USA Today, Garden State gas station chain QuickChek serves up some of the best gas station food in America, earning the No. 7 spot on the list of the website’s 10 Best gas station chains for food in 2024. That poll included, Gas stations, convenience stores, and truck stops.

 I must agree that Quik Chek makes a decent sub and has some decent food selections that include soups and salads.

Outside of New Jersey, there are places like Buc-ee’s, known for famous items such as their signature Beaver Nuggets, a caramel coated corn puff that tastes like Cap’n Crunch meets Sugar Pops cereal. They also carry high quality jerky in flavors like, Bohemian Garlic, Cherry Maple, Peppered Turkey, Steakhouse, Sweet and Spicy, and Teriyaki, and one of the most beloved items at Buc-ee’s is the Smoked Brisket Sandwich, either a sliced brisket version or a chopped brisket version. I’d hit the sliced brisket every time.

If you want to follow your gas station meal with something sweet, then try one of their 20 varieties of fudge. They carry everything from Nilla Wafer fudge to salted caramel, and peanut butter fudge.

Closer to home, we have a Monmouth County favorite, Claudie’s Fried Chicken, which started out in a gas station at 417 Route 35 in Middletown.

In 2023, they relocated to the old Sabato’s Prime Meats location in Belford at 113 Leonardville Rd.  They make incredible fried chicken and killer wings. I’ve yet to visit the new location.

It’s time to find out where Jersey folks go to get their favorite gas station eats.

  • Busy Bee Roasters and Coffee Shop - 71 NJ-36, West Long Branch, NJ 07764 (Located in Gas Land)

    Fresh roasted coffee at a gas station? You better believe it! You can get more than just a great cup of coffee, you can buy a bag of fresh roasted coffee beans! They personally blend and roast every coffee they sell, and there are quite a few.

    Lots of folks rave about the great breakfast sandwiches and tortas but turn your attention towards the Brazilian baked goods. The cheese bread is insane as are the selection of pastries and croissants. They also offer baked or fried empanadas that are the talk of the town.
    This is a must stop on your next road trip.

  • Saturn Pizza - 592 NJ-70, Brick Township, NJ 08723 (Located in Conoco gas station)

    As I was writing this segment, I noticed that Google has this place listed as Temporarily Closed. I hope it’s just temporary. What was once considered “our little secret” is now a go to for a lot of my food friends. Anthony’s comments included, the Queen margarita pizza has lots of great flavors going on with excellent cheese. The prices are reasonable, and If I’m in the area again I would stop back. Bonus points because the wife liked it.

    I personally love the crispy thin crust and the large selection of specialty pies. Don’t judge, just try it.

  • Buon Gusto Express - 401 S Main St, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210 (Located in Riggins Gas Station)

    Gourmet desserts galore, wings, empanadas of all kinds including shrimp, and pot roast empanadas, and more than just decent pizza can be found at this heavenly little gas station gem. They have an honest to goodness professional baker on the premises making cakes, pastries, and other sweet treats. Buy a whole cake or just a slice.

     

  • My Ranch Taqueria - 134 Rte 4 E, Englewood, NJ 07631 (Located Next To Mobil Gas Station)

    Hole in the wall taco joint next to a gas station mini mart. The Birria tacos need to be experienced. Tamales, empanadas, and more. There’s even a “My Ranch” Teriyaki menu too. Chicken, Al Pastor, shrimp, vegetable and steak served  Mexican Style served with onion, peppers, cabbage, Zucchini, spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, jalapeño over Mexican rice. 

    They also serve nachos and fajita dishes too. Now this is a great find.

  • Pita Pocket - 921 NJ-73, Mt Laurel Township, NJ 08054 (Located in Lukoil gas station)

    Delicious Middle Eastern Cuisine can be found in this gas station parking lot. Everything from Kebab platters, to pita pockets filled with your choice of lamb, chicken schwarma, and falafel. A variety of appetizers including hummus, Baba Ganouj, Tabouli, and stuffed grape leaves. Soups, strews, and salads too.

    I came across an influencer named JL Jupiter, who really should be a household name. He sold me on this place.

     

     

     

  • Royal Farms - various locations including our local place at 1756 NJ-88, Brick Township, NJ 08724

    Royal Farms has been crowned the BEST gas station for food by USA Today’s 10Best award! 

    The fried chicken gets mixed reviews at the Brick location, although most people give it good marks when it’s served fresh. I purchased their world famous fried chicken and I loved it. I also loved the wedge fries and spicy tenders I purchased on different occasions. The only thing I thought needed work was the biscuits, they were a tad dry. it might have been an off day for the folks making my biscuits. Surely worth another try.
