Lottery update: A $50,000 Powerball ticket was sold in Howell on Monday. Lucky Convenience, 2940 Route 9, Howell. The winning numbers for the Jan. 23 drawing were: 12, 31, 47, 58, and 60. A nationwide survey of coolest towns in each state has selected Cape May as its pick in New Jersey. The travel website known as Far and Wide calls Cape May a beach town that’s fun to visit all year long. In New York, the website picked Cooperstown as the coolest small town.
The government of Mexico has chosen New Brunswick as the first city in New Jersey where it will locate a consulate. In the past, Mexican nationals who live in New Jersey had to contact a consulate in New York. Mexican officials decided to open a consulate in New Brunswick because the demand has grown in New Jersey, and so has the Mexican population. It’s expected to open in the spring.
Belford’s ferry terminal repairs finally has it’s funding. They let Congressman Pallone announce the dough to repair the dock for safety reasons. Monmouth County this past year replaced the longtime operator of the ferry — NY Waterway — with its competitor — SeaStreak. The dock repairs were part of the negotiations .
Speaking of money. Manasquan voters approved almost 14 million for school improvements in the town in a vote on Tuesday. The APP reports that the funds will primarily benefit upgrades and repairs the elementary school. 21% of registered voters turned out with 56% voting in favor of the spending.
The paper also reports that the respiratory illness season, flu season, that started very early this fall and winter season may also be ending early. Doctors reported never seeing it as big as it was in November. In fact, it’s still hard to find medicine on the shelves. But now is usually when flu season is peaking and apparently flu cases have already begun waning. Combine that with a lower post-holiday COVID surge and that’s good news on the health department front.
