The Morning Rat Race

DETROIT, MI - JULY 27: Shohei Ohtani #17 of the Los Angeles Angels hits a solo home run against the Detroit Tigers during the fourth inning of game two of a doubleheader at Comerica Park on July 27, 2023 in Detroit, Michigan.

Good morning, Sports fans!  It’s your friendly neighborhood Sports Fan here…Davey Mac…and I’ve got another spell-binding and action-packed Sports Report for ya to start your week!  We’ve got the football, the basketball, and the hockey…but first…it’s the baseball!  Hot stove talk!  And everyone who follows Major League Baseball is discussing one thing this morning…Shohei Ohtani’s record-setting contract!

Los Angeles Angels v Detroit Tigers - Game Two

DETROIT, MI – JULY 27: Shohei Ohtani #17 of the Los Angeles Angels celebrates with teammates after hitting a home run during the fourth inning of game two of a doubleheader at Comerica Park on July 27, 2023 in Detroit, Michigan.

Shohei Ohtani has signed a record-breaking deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Ohtani will get $700 million over the next ten years with L.A.  It is the biggest contract in North American team sports history…in fact…Ohtani’s $70 million a year is larger than the Orioles and A’s entire payrolls for their whole team!

Detroit Tigers v Los Angeles Angels

ANAHEIM, CA – JUNE 20: Shohei Ohtani #17 of the Los Angeles Angels pumps his fist as he rounds the bases after hitting a two-run home run in the fifth inning of the game against the Detroit Tigers at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on June 20, 2021 in Anaheim, California.

Insanity!  I mean…seven hundred million dollars is truly insane.  If I was lucky enough to have the amount of cash…I don’t think I could possibly spend it in one lifetime.  I’d probably buy a mansion…a limo…a jet…a helicopter…a Ferrari…and a vintage Harley.  That’d still give me…what…about $685 million or so to play around with after my rich guy purchases?!  That’s nuts!

2021 T-Mobile Home Run Derby

DENVER, COLORADO – JULY 12: Shohei Ohtani #17 of the Los Angeles Angels bats during the 2021 T-Mobile Home Run Derby at Coors Field on July 12, 2021 in Denver, Colorado.

But all of that nonsense aside…is Ohtani really worth this game-changing contract?  Ohtani received the $700 mil because the guys is an excellent pitcher AND fantastic hitter.  However, last year, he hurt his shoulder pitching and had to miss the last month of the season.  And it was at that time that the Angles fell out of playoff contention.  What if that happens again?  If he’s playing twice the amount of most players…isn’t he twice as likely to get injured?

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim v Oakland Athletics

OAKLAND, CA – APRIL 01: Shohei Ohtani #17 of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitches in the bottom of the first inning of his Major League pitching debut against the Oakland Athletics at Oakland Alameda Coliseum on April 1, 2018 in Oakland, California.

It’ll be interesting to watch.  In order for this contract to truly make sense, Ohtani needs to stay healthy and lead the Dodgers to a World Series title.  Otherwise, L.A. may have just put themselves into a huge financial hole.  I’m Davey Mac…that’s my two cents for what it’s worth…and now…on to the Scoreboard!
