By now the entire Rat Rock nation is a buzz with the news that the station has secured the legendary band Nickelback to headline our annual Nutcracker Ball Holiday Concert at the Starland Ballroom in Sayerville, November 18th. Tickets go on sale Wednesday morning October 26th, at 10am at Starlandballroom.com.

It’s truly been a long road for these Canadian rockers, who began their careers in the mid 90’s with the inauspicious debut album Curb in 1996. But it was the year 2000 single “Leader Of Men” that first put them on the map, from the album “The State”. From there it was stardom, and worldwide super stardom. Albums like Silver Side Up in 2001 and the Long Road in 2003 paved the way for the unbelievable success of their October 2005 release, All The Right Reasons. The album was the band’s first number one in the United States, and sold a whopping 18 million albums world wide, more than tripling the success of The Long Road.

Over the past 17 years since then, the band has continued to churn out albums and worldwide hits. It has been a while however, since they have toured behind a new record. Now comes their latest effort, Get Rollin’, their first new album in 5 years. If the first single “San Quentin is any indication, the band has definitely rediscovered their hard rock roots. With crunchy guitars and the classic Chad Kroeger snarls, Get Rollin’ is set to become another great effort from a band that has it’s share of mega success in the face of unprecedented backlash from critics and fans that have challenged Kroeger’s “formulaic” style of song writing. Chad has not backed down though, using the old adage from from Kiss’s Gene Simmons, that goes “Yes, we are sell outs. We sell out every show, every night!”

So with that, please enjoy my personal Top 5 Nickelback songs with their videos, and we’ll see YOU at Starland on November 18th, with something in your mouth…Like a beer!

  • Leader Of Men from the album The State

Gotta include this song. The Rat was one of the first stations in the country to play Nickelback and this post grunge ripper was the reason why. Still holds up today.

  • Animals from the album All The Right Reasons

Perhaps the band’s best opening guitar riff. Oh and let’s be honest, the first time you heard Chad sing about getting it on while driving brought back some fond memories!

  • Never Again from the album Silver Side Up

Uncomfortably auto biographical, this hard and heavy look into the darkness of spousal abuse and a family torn apart made not just for serious story telling, but for provoking serious thought on the subject from the listener.

  • This Afternoon from the album Dark Horse

In 2010, at a time when backlash was already surfacing against the band, they embraced it with this silly, fun, party song, complete with this self deprecating, over the top music video.

  • Burn it to the ground from the album Dark Horse

Sorry but every time I hear it, I still want to hit someone with an RKO.
