NEW YORK - JULY 19: New York Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling speaks during the teams 63rd Old Timers Day before the game against the Detroit Tigers on July 19, 2009 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx borough of New York City.

John Sterling Retires From Yankees At 85

Breaking news out of the world of Baseball as the New York Yankees have announced that legendary radio play-by-play man John Sterling will be retiring effective immediately.  Sterling, 85 years old, has broadcast Yankee games for the past 36 seasons…going all the way back to 1989.

Detroit Tigers v New York Yankees

NEW YORK – JULY 19: New York Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling speaks during the teams 63rd Old Timers Day before the game against the Detroit Tigers on July 19, 2009 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx borough of New York City.

John’s long-time broadcasting partner and friend Suzyn Waldman discussed the news on the YES Network before last night’s game against the Blue Jays.  Suzyn has been broadcasting games with John since 2005 but they have both been close friends since 1987 when they both did work for WFAN in New York City.

Meanwhile, John’s former radio partner who became the Yankees play-by-play man on TV, Michael Kay, talked about John’s retirement while broadcasting the game last night.  Kay said it wasn’t health issues…but rather John is just tired.  John lives in Edgewater, New Jersey…not a long commute…but I can’t blame him for being sick of the George Washington Bridge traffic.  He will be 86 on July 4th.

Talkin' Yanks on Twitter: "Michael Kay says John Sterling isn't retiring for health reasons, he just thought it was timeJohn Sterling will be 86 on July 4th pic.twitter.com/098obFl5SV / Twitter"

The world of baseball (and sports, for that matter) are losing a true original.  Sterling is the last of a dying breed…the classic baseball broadcaster who becomes a beloved character.  Vin Scully, Harry Caray, Bob Uecker (who’s still doing Brewers home games) are just a few of the legendary names that fans loved as much as the players themselves.  The Yankees will have a special ceremony on Saturday before the one o’clock game…so make sure you have your DVR recording pre-game coverage…because it will be cool to see the Yanks honor John.  I’m Davey Mac…now on to the rest of the Sports Report!
