The Morning Rat Race

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JANUARY 27: (L-R) Precious Achiuwa #5, Jalen Brunson #11 and Josh Hart #3 of the New York Knicks react against the Miami Heat in the second half at Madison Square Garden on January 27, 2024 in New York City. The Knicks defeated the Heat 125-109.

Good morning, Sports fans!  Davey Mac here with another action-packed Sports Report for ya!  We’ve got big news in baseball, football, and hockey!  But first!  Basketball!

And that’s because it was a magical night in Madison Square Garden last night as the Knicks’ amazing Jalen Brunson was named to his first NBA All Star Team yesterday and then Brunson went out and scored 40 points and led the Knicks to a comeback win over the Indiana Pacers…109 to 105…and the Knicks win their 9th game in a row as a result!

Denver Nuggets v New York Knicks

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – JANUARY 25: Jalen Brunson #11 of the New York Knicks reacts after scoring during the second half against the Denver Nuggets at Madison Square Garden on January 25, 2024 in New York City.

They were down by as much as 15 points to the Pacers before a furious comeback in the second half led by Brunson.  The Knicks’ win streak is the longest in the NBA and now they are just a half-game behind the Bucks for second in the Eastern Conference (at 32 and 17).  By the way, Knicks forward Julius Randle, who’s currently out for at least three weeks, was also named to the All Star Team as well.  Hop on board the Knicks Train, folks!  This is a special season!

Orlando Magic v New York Knicks

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – OCTOBER 24: Julius Randle #30 and Jalen Brunson #11 of the New York Knights celebrate after a basket during the third quarter of the game against the Orlando Magic at Madison Square Garden on October 24, 2022 in New York City.

Now, I know I’m getting ahead of myself here, folks.  And I’m trying to keep calm…I’m attempting to chill…but…oh, screw it…the Knicks are going to the NBA Finals and we’re gonna win it all!  And, yes, I said “we” when referring to the Knicks!  Why not?!  I’ve been a fan of the Knickerbockers for as long as I’ve loved the Yankees and Giants (about the age of six is when I remember first watching sports).  Patrick Ewing was my favorite player ever…and I’ve been supporting this team all these years.

Charlotte Hornets v Miami Heat - Game Seven

MIAMI, FL – MAY 01: Assistnat Coach Patrick Ewing of the Charlotte Hornets looks on during Game Seven of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals of the 2016 NBA Playoffs against the Miami Heat at American Airlines Arena on May 1, 2016 in Miami, Florida.

But let’s be honest.  The 21st Century has been a rough one for the Knicks.  They have had dismal season after dismal season in the 2000’s.  In fact, the last time the Knicks even made it to the NBA Finals was 1999…25 years ago!

Latrell Sprewell #8

5 Feb 1999: Latrell Sprewell #8 of the New York Knicks listens to head coach Jeff Van Gundy during the game against the Orlando Magic at the Orlando Arena in Orlando, Florida. The Magic defeated the Knicks 93-85.

And in terms of championships…the Knicks haven’t won the NBA Finals since 1973!  But that’s all changing this year!  Jalen Brunson is one of the absolute BEST players in basketball, the Knicks are winning like crazy, and the buzz is palpable…New York is behind this fun team!  So let’s get psyched, Knicks fans!  And as the commercial back in the day used to say…Go New York, go New York, go!
