The Morning Rat Race

NEW YORK - MAY 06: Manager Joe Torre of the New York Yankees smiles as he answers questions from the media about the signing of Roger Clemens after the team defeated the Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium on May 6, 2007 in the Bronx borough of New York City.

Good morning, Sports fans!  It’s your advocate of athletics here, Davey Mac, and I’ve got an exciting and brand new Sports Report for ya on a Tuesday!  A Cy Young winner signs with a new MLB team!  The Knicks stay hot as they grab another road win!  Hockey matchups for tonight!  And rumors floating about who the Giants will draft with their first round pick!  But first!

The New York Yankees invited their former legendary manager Joe Torre to be a coach for a day in Spring Training yesterday.  The Hall-Of-Famer won four World Series and six American League Pennants with the Yanks and is considered one of the great managers of all time.

Man, just looking at that footage makes me jones for the ’90’s Yankee teams.  With Joe, Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, David Cone, Paul O’Neill, Mariano Rivera, and more on the field…it felt like the Yanks could never lose.  And, man, it’s a little insane that we’re celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the 1999 championship-winning team!  Where did the time go?!

Meanwhile, it seems that current Yankee manager Aaron Boone and the players had a great time with Torre as part of the coaching staff.  The players said it was a really cool experience.

Quite frankly, I wouldn’t mind actually seeing Joe Torre be Aaron Boone’s bench coach the way Don Zimmer was Torre’s bench coach.  Torre would bounce ideas off of Zim…who would let Joe know what he thought of them.  Wouldn’t that work well with Boone managing and Torre coaching?  I say the Yankees should get Joe back in pinstripes full-time!  I’m Davey Mac…now on to the rest of the Sports Report!
