The Morning Rat Race

TAMPA, FLORIDA - JANUARY 15: Head coach Nick Sirianni of the Philadelphia Eagles walks off the field after being defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card Playoffs at Raymond James Stadium on January 15, 2024 in Tampa, Florida.

Good morning, Sports fans!  Davey Mac here with your first Sports Report of the weekend (after a football-heavy three-day weekend) and we gotta get right into the action!

We start with football…where the Eagles were surprisingly beaten and eliminated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night…32 to 9.  Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for 337 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions…as the Eagles are DONE for the year…and Tampa advances.

And with this devastating loss, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni suddenly finds himself in the hot seat (only a year after making it to the Super Bowl).   Sirianni led the Eagles to a 10 and 1 start this year…only to lose five of their last six games and blow their chance at a home-field advantage and a high seed in the playoffs.  And then to top it off by losing to a 9 and 8 Buccaneer team that was not highly thought of by NFL pundits…well…this is a serious problem for Sirianni.

Meanwhile, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had this to say when asked if Sirianni should return: “I didn’t know he was going anywhere.  I didn’t know that.”  Now, that’s not criticizing Siranni…but it ain’t exactly an endorsement, either.  Pretty lukewarm statement if you ask me…which is not a good sign for Sirianni.  To contrast, after the Cowboys were upset by the Packers, Dallas QB Dak Prescott said that if people are gonna give Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy blame for losing the game…then people should be critical of Dak, too.  But Hurts’ quote was more of a vague non-response.  Again- bad sign.

In any event…it should be interesting to watch.  And because I have to say it…I’ll just say it.  Bill Belichick it out there, Eagles fans.  Maybe that’s the answer to all your prayers.  I’m Davey Mac…now on to the rest of the Report!
