Good morning, Sports fans! Davey Mac here with your first Sports Report of the week! Baseball, basketball, football, and hockey! But first…we’ve got a fun little story here about the…um…sport of dodgeball.
In the cinematic classic Dodgeball, Patches O’Houlihan said, “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.” Well…it turns out…Patches may be mistaken.
According to a new study, it is actually easier to dodge a wrench than it is to dodge a ball. It’s all about the density of the object. A wrench is going to cut through the air in a straight line…making it easy to predict where it’s going to be.

LOS ANGELES, CA – JUNE 14: Actor Vince Vaughn attempts to autograph a dodgeball as he attends the world premiere of the Twentieth Century Fox film “Dodgeball” at the Mann Village Theater June 14, 2004 in Westwood, California.
However, your classic red dodgeball has low mass and high surface area…meaning that the air has much more of an effect on it. So a ball is more likely to curve and spin…making it much more difficult to predict where it will exactly land.

NEW YORK – JUNE 15: (U.S. TABS OUT) Actor Ben Stiller celebrates with his trophy he won during a dodgeball game during an appearance on MTV’s Total Request Live at the MTV Times Square Studios June 15, 2004 in New York City.
So, in conclusion, learning to dodge a wrench may not properly train you to be good at dodgeball. I recommend using Wiffle Balls as a training method rather than wrenches. For one…a Wiffle Ball curves tremendously. And secondly, a Wiffle Ball, unlike a wrench, is not made of metal. But I’m just Davey Mac…who am I to argue with the great Patches O’Houlihan? Anyway, now on to the rest of the Sports Report!
