If you’re not familiar with the classic patty melt, allow me to introduce you to this ooey gooey delicious dish.
Think of it as a burger without the traditional bun. Kind of a hybrid of a grilled cheese sandwich and a hamburger.
It’ a grilled or fried burger, with melted cheese, ,sautéed onions, on grilled white or rye bread, and cooked until the cheese is perfectly melted. A patty melt may be served as a traditional sandwich or an open-face sandwich.
When I was growing up, we had a Friendly’s within walking distance, and they served the best patty melts.
They also had their famous tuna melts, which I would order on occasion .It was basically a tuna sandwich on grilled white or rye bread, with melted American cheese.
To me, a patty melt must have melted American cheese. I suppose you can switch it up and add whatever cheese you desire.
In the 21st century, people are always looking for upgrades and out of the ordinary versions of their childhood favorites.
Perhaps you’re looking to modernize the patty melt by using different proteins such as, ground fresh tuna, maybe ground turkey, then there are vegetarian and vegan versions as well.
I have a George Foreman grill, so it might be easier and more waist friendly to make a patty melt on that contraption.
I’d rather watch my weight for the whole week, and then on a cheat day, make a traditional patty melt either on a flat top or better yet, in a cast iron pan.
The caramelized onions make the patty melt.
There are plenty of people like me who want to keep childhood memories alive by occasionally eating foods that bring back fond memories.
We’re going to reveal where my foodie friends and I go to get a solid patty melt in the Garden State. Oh, don’t forget a side of fries.
Steve's Burgers - 506 US-46, Garfield, NJ 07026
Steve's Burgers makes one of the best, if not the best patty melt in the state. Thanks to my Warrior friends for the introduction. Try the Cuban sandwich too, it'll make your day.
BURGERSTRASSE - 14 Market St, Clifton, NJ 07012 & 130 Park Avenue, East Rutherford, N.J.
BurgerStrasse established in 2018 aims to be a favorite in the Northern New Jersey area by serving hand-pressed burgers seared and steamed to perfection on a Miraclean grill, served along choice toppings and hand-cut fries.
For $8.00 you're getting their signature Patty Melt which is a single Patty served with caramelized onions, bbq glaze, American cheese, and haus sauce.
According to my friend Tom, every bite is sheer delight.
Friendly's - 1210 Hooper Ave, Toms River, NJ 08753 & 13 other New Jersey Locations
Sadly, Friendly's has closed way too many locations in the past few years. There are only 14 left across the state. I'm happy to report that the Fishamajig is still on the menu. It's similar to a patty melt, but made with fried fish, like the McDonald's Filet O Fish.
Shut Up and Eat - 804 Main St, Toms River, NJ 08753
This fun quirky joint serves up some yummy patty melts. The menu is so huge! People visiting for the first time are blown away by the countless choice of items.

Ryan's Boulevard Deli & Grill - 117 Boulevard, Seaside Heights, NJ 08751
They have a roast beef melt on grilled rye that is to die for. Just ask them swap out the roast beef for a burger and you'll be sinking your teeth into one of the best patty melts in Seaside.
All Seasons Diner - 176 Wyckoff Rd, Eatontown, NJ 07724
Many of my Monmouth County foodie friends agree that All Seasons Diner does a great patty melt. This was one of my favorite diners when I lived in Ocean Twp.
Jack's Goal Line Stand - 149 Brighton Ave, Long Branch, NJ 07740
Another joint where you're almost always going to love what comes off the grill. This place also makes great wings.
Olde Village Pub - 1211 NJ-35, Middletown Township, NJ 07748
I spotted this bad ass version of a patty melt along with a description on one of the foodie sites I belong to. It took my breath away.
