A Guide to The Best Homemade Ice Cream Shops in Ocean County.

 Warm weather has arrived and many of the ice cream shops in Ocean County are open and ready to serve you.

You’re never far away from good homemade ice cream on the Jersey Shore.

Sure, you can go to commercial shops like Mister Softee, Carvel, and Dairy Queen, they’re yummy too.  But why not venture out and try the other local shops that make their inventive homemade flavors of this cold creamy treat?

Lots of them are small-batch recipes with unusual flavors. I will try any flavor at least once. I have tried homemade garlic ice cream before and it’s an acquired taste. Never again.

Out of the way chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, it’s time to venture out of our comfort zone and try some rather unique combinations to wake up our palates.

I scoured the internet to see if I could find a handful of unusual ice cream flavors and the first one, I came across was cinnamon-basil with a vanilla ice cream base…hmmm.

The 2 strangest combinations were Bleu cheese ice cream with pomegranate ripple and a balsamic vinegar and fruit ice cream. I’d try them, why not?

One of my favorite unique flavors is sweet corn ice cream with actual corn kernels mixed in. Think about how delicious Jersey corn is when it arrives in July, and then add sweet cream. To me, that’s a winning combination.

While doing my research, I realized just how many places make ice cream in-house across Monmouth & Ocean County. I had no idea there were that many places with homemade ice cream.

I guess I just got used to going to a few places and never ventured out to see who else creates these frozen dessert treats.

Right now, I’m going to stick with Ocean County. The Monmouth County list will come in a few days.

Let’s see what Ocean County has to offer.

• Mrs. Walker's Ice Cream Parlor - 908 Fischer Blvd, Toms River, NJ 08753 and locations in Lakehurst & Forked River

  Mrs. Walkers has 3 locations in Ocean County. You can’t help but smile when you see that little red barn building on Fischer Blvd with all that creamy homemade goodness inside those doors. The flavors here aren’t too off the wall. The chocolate peanut butter and the Mississippi Mud Pie ring my bell. They also create excellent custom cakes, offer low fat yogurt, Italian ices, and low fat-sugar free ice cream.

  If you’re looking for something a tad more decadent, you can choose from over 40 toppings. Plus the homemade brownies and the dream cones are heavenly. This place is a nice little throwback to your childhood.

• Miss Mindy's Homemade Ice Cream - 155 Atlantic City Blvd, Bayville, NJ 08721

  Nothing but love for this unique vibrant shop. They also offer doggie cups, vegan, gluten free and dairy free options. If you see more than one flavor that tickles your fancy, no problem. Miss Mindy’s offers a 6 scoop pack. They also make the most decadent shakes with your favorite flavors topped with a ton of whipped cream.

  The flavors are always changing. Currently you can choose from: Ginger- Lemon- Basil, Charcoal – Caramel Cheddar, Coconut Cream Pie, Carrot Cake – Double Chocolate Cake, Banana Puddin’ Pie, and many other fabulous flavors. Plus many flavors that aren’t so unusual.

  This place is new to me. Herb from Jackson mentioned that this is his go to for the best handcrafted ice cream he’s had outside of his grandparent’s home in Pennsylvania.

  Avery & Jay’s Handcrafted Ice Cream is an Upscale Ice Cream Shop offering Delicious Soft Serve Flavors, Handcrafted Scooped Ice Cream and Fresh Italian Ices made daily.   The fact that rang my bell was that their peanut butter cup ice cream is made with peanut butter cups that are hand made in house. Explosion cakes, frappes, bubble waffles, and store made cookies and brownies.

• Muller's Creamery - 53 Main St, Toms River, NJ 08753

  This place had me at Cappuccino Coffee Crunch Custard! I love that they also have ice cream cups for your pup. Muller’s Creamery makes their own sprinkles too! I think I’m in love. You may be familiar with Muller’s ice cream cart under their blue tent from all of the downtown Toms River events. Now they have their very own store specializing in homemade premium ice cream in both traditional and not so traditional flavors.

  Homemade creamy goodness is how most people describe Point Creamery!

  Vegan friends, you’ll be happy  to know that you’re not forgotten. It’s a chocolate peanut butter swirl & Almond Joy cup kind of day for some people. Give me a couple of scoops of the Midnight Crunch, and my vegan friend would love a couple of scoops of the mint Oreo, please.  I heard the guy behind us say that he was ordering the pumpkin salted crumb ice cream.

  A new recipe with oat milk is coming any day now.  They also make Dole Whip in a variety of flavors.

  How can we forget this hometown hero serving the Jersey Shore for nearly 50 years. All of their ice cream and cakes are made in house from the freshest ingredients. They have a location in Spring Lake on Route 71 as well. Their flavors include: Jersey Monkey which is banana ice cream with a peanut butter swirl & chocolate chips, salted caramel pretzel, strawberry bon bon which is strawberry ice cream with a chocolate hard shell. They offer vegan and sugar free options too.
