SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ - MAY 27: Couples kiss at a bar in Seaside Heights on the first weekend of New Jersey beaches re-opening to the public on May 27, 2013 in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. Some would say we’ve saved the best (or saddest) for last. The old hangouts we loved and lost. The great bars and clubs from the past 25 years at the Jersey Shore that are no more.

This list could easily have 20 or more places on it, but I narrowed it down to 6 places I myself really enjoyed back in the day. Some have been gone well over a decade, while others closed up shop within the past 5 years. Regardless, they all were among my favorite places to hang at the shore ever since I moved here in the mid 90’s.

I think I’ve done a pretty good job of canvasing the landscape both in geography and style of establishment. Clubs, pubs, taverns and music bars are all here, or at least WERE all here once. They met their demise due to different circumstances for sure. from real estate deals, to Superstorm Sandy, to Covid. However I’m sure I’m not the only one to have fond memories of these fun joints!

I want to begin by giving shout outs to some honorable mention places. The could have easily been on the list as far as I’m concerned but I just was unable to get the info I needed, since some of them have been gone for so long. So shout outs to the old Scooters on Route 9 in Howell, 507 Main in Belmar, Bar Casablanca in Brielle, The Wooden Nickel in Belmar, The Beach Bar in Seaside Heights, and The Polo Club/The Tides in Neptune. All fabulous places and worth a mention!

So now here is my own personal list. Places I used to hang and maybe you did too! If not, I want to hear the spots you used to knock a few back and work your hookup game back in the day! You did have game back then, right??

  • The Tropical Pub 102 13th Avenue Belmar

Great any day or night of the week. But my God, those Sunday Mornings  with Breakfast Bingo. There has never been another place like it since!

  • Tradewinds Nightclub 1331 Ocean Avenue Sea Bright

If you were able to, but never went to a show at the Tradewinds, I honestly feel bad for you. The place was magic. Magic! I once stood on a rainy Sunday night inside the club with a couple hundred people watching Soul Asylum. Stood and talked with Bon Jovi for a half hour. Just talking music and radio. It was that kind of place. Special guests always showing up and playing with the bands. Then the outside with the rocks, the pools and oh those melon balls!  Man that place Rocked!

  • Reggie's Bar Ocean Avenue Belmar

Sit at the bar and watch the ladies come off the beach, Dance on that warped dance floor, or see a kick ass local cover band. Reggie’s was the sh*t. I once danced with my coworker’s new roommate there on a Saturday night. I didn’t even know her name. Now I’m married to her.

  • Joey Harrison's Surf Club 1900 Ocean Avenue Ortley Beach

The Granddaddy of them all. Opened originally in the 1930’s and as Joey Harrison’s Surf Club since 1973, this was a diamond of the Jersey Shore. In fact that was the name of the adjacent restaurant as you can see in the old commercial below. Sandy took the Surf Club out in 2012 as we know, but late last year Toms River bought the property and will make it a public beach! No condos or townhomes, just preserved land for sun and fun.. The way is should be!

  • The Beach Bar on the Eastside of the boardwalk in Seaside Heights

Majestically jetting out into the Atlantic, the Beach Bar was always a good time. The Raw Bar was excellent, and the bands rocked!

Now it’s the fantastic new Ocean View Restaurant !
