Good morning, Sports fans! It’s your official broadcaster and gambler Davey Mac here and we’ve got a big Sports Report for ya this morning! The World Baseball Classic finals! Magic Johnson in the NFL? And more! But first…
…Sad news to report from the world of basketball…where we just lost a true New York Sports legend…as Knicks captain Willis Reed has died. He was 80. Reed was the iconic leader and star center for the Knicks in the ’60’s and ’70’s and led the team to two championships (in 1970 and 1973).
The seven-time All Star and NBA Hall-Of-Famer will always be remembered for hobbling onto the court for Game 7 of the NBA Finals between the Knicks and Lakers in 1970. Reed had badly injured his leg previously in the series and was thought to be out for the game. But Reed came out to the court in warmups, started the game, and the Garden went nuts…the Knicks went on to win the game…113 to 99…and ultimately the series. It was the Knicks’ first NBA Championship. Iconic moment.
In later years Reed…greatly respected for not just his leadership skills but also his mind…had jobs in front office positions…including being a head coach and general manager. He also stayed close to his former Knicks teammates and to the Knicks organization.
We lost a true New York Sports Legend in Will Reed. But his memory will live on. Rest in peace, Willis. I’m Davey Mac.
