Jimmy Steal

Guinness sales understandably go up on St. Patrick's Day, but how many pints are sold? Per 'USA Today', 13 million pints were sold on March 17 in 2017 alone. Sláinte!

Pubs and Taverns are as much a part of the Jersey Shore as Boardwalks and Pork Roll. In fact, did you know that there are at least 4 of these establishments that have been in business for over 100 years ? It’s true!

Add in a few more that are closing in a their century mark and you have some real hoppy history here at the Jersey Shore. One of the places on this list opened 20 years BEFORE the Civil War!

Now that obviously cannot compare to the Revolutionary War grandeur of the one and only Moore’s Tavern in Freehold. So we must honor that king of the taverns first, before we can move on. I believe I read on their website https://www.moorestavern.com/about/ that the year was 1787 when they first were granted a license to operate continuously as a tavern. Dang!

As we move on from Moore’s, we highlight places that are still serving up tavern grog and pub grub after all these years. All are in Monmouth County. However, will be sure to do a list of Ocean County establishments soon, While the OC’s pub history may not be quite as long and storied, I’m sure I can find a few old time treasures to share.

One thing is for sure, and that is we are lucky to have these great old places with so much history in their walls. Boy, if those walls could talk too! Slante’!
