Christmas Day is almost here, and that means Christmas commercials are really ramping up. I’ve come up with a list of the most memorable ever.

Santa and Coke kids

Some of these are pretty old. Some are from the 70s and 80s, while others are more recent. I don’t know really what it is about them, but each one has something specific that made them memorable. Maybe it was a character, a song, someone famous, or perhaps, that it just sucked so bad, it made some Christmas commercials become legendary.

Christmas Advertising Has Shaped How We View The Holidays

According to PBS, By the 20th century, mass advertising became commonplace. Consumer messages were now broadcast to the public through billboards, magazines, radio, and later the moving image of television. Mass advertising was what allowed the slowly developing idea of Christmas as a time to give gifts to go mainstream, and eventually, to define Christmas itself.

Businesses realized that Christmas commercials could be a brilliant money spinner. Seasonal advertisements began to emphasize the act of “giving gifts” as a major part of Christmas time by having Father Christmas physically display branded products to a growing consumer market. The link between this Christmas icon and consumer goods was made very obvious in advertising. Advertising took the fable of Father Christmas and linked him with physical brands, turning myth into a reality, something that could be touched, smelled, and experienced.

Thinking Of Dining Out This Christmas Eve? Check Out What’s Open!

In 1937 Coca Cola introduced the world to a simplified and more accessible version of Father Christmas, dressed in Coca-Cola red, this time without the traditional cape. In their ads he was named Santa Claus, in accordance with American tradition. Santa Claus became a personification of the brand and gave the brown liquid a personality and a face, associating the drink with one of the happiest yearly western celebrations. Coke repeated the same message every December, and the name “Santa” slowly replaced “Father Christmas” in popular parlance in the UK too. This led to the red suited man becoming the icon most associated with Christmas.

  • Crazy Eddie's Insane Christmas Commercial 1985

Crazy Eddie Antar found his television personification in the form of radio DJ Jerry Carroll. Not one, but ALL of Jerry’s commercials were nuts, and if you grew up in the Tri State area like I did in the 70s and 80s you loved every frenetic moment. Of course the commercials reached their zenith (no pun intended) around the holidays with Carroll imploring the viewer to shop around but don’t buy anything! This particular 1985 commercial is my favorite. Obviously Jerry knew how to roll with the punches. Classic.

  • McDonald's Skating Ronald Commercial Mid 80s

This fantasy on ice ran for quite a few holiday seasons in the early to mid 80s, at the height of the burger wars. The kids travel through the woods to a secluded frozen pond to skate with no parental supervision. Dangerous enough, but now add in they find a clown there doing his own solo figure skating routine, and Bambi and the crew from the forest, just for good measure. Campy and corny as it is, it really sends a message of friendship. More about the way people should be toward each other than selling burgers.

  • Apple's "Misunderstood" Commercial 2013

The misunderstood kid at Christmas. The misfit. The outcast in his own family. The black sheep. Dude, forget that! It’s 2013 and he’s got a new Iphone with Apple Air Play! Man, this one cuts to the bone as far as teary eyed family love.

  • Chevrolet "Holiday To Remember" Commercial 2023

Hey why not use Alzheimer’s to sell cars? Well this spot was done very effectively, and quite honestly it’s part of a lot of our lives around the holidays. And everyday.

  • Coca Cola "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" Commercial 1977

Catchy, uplifting, and boosting Winter cold beverage drinking sales doesn’t hurt either! This was a turning point for soda commercials in the US.

  • Anheuser-Busch Budweiser Clydesdales Christmas Commercial 1987

While this Anheuser-Busch tradition started back in the 70s on television, it is this 1987 version that I feel is the best. I get excited when the fire company delivers trees. Imagine seeing this magnificent beasts blasting down your street!

  • Running Santa Target Commercial 2011

Before Amazon was delivering stuff same day, Target was reminding everyone they were open Christmas Eve, and even the big guy knew it! Genius commercial.
