In case you haven’t heard The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a massive, surprise hit! It has shocked Hollywood insiders by racking up over $871 million dollars thus far and is on the trajectory to becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time.
And, as someone who just saw it with his kids this past Saturday, I can tell you…it’s really good! If you grew up playing Super Mario games…this is the ultimate Mario experience for you. There are Easter eggs from multiple Super Mario games…from the original NES game to Nintendo 64 to the Switch and more. There are references to the original Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart, Luigi’s Mansion, Diddy Kong Racing, the original Donkey Kong (where Mario technically made his first video game appearance), Super Mario Odyssey and more. As a player of all of these games, it was cool seeing them come alive in a story.
And the score of the movie was excellent, too. You get theme after theme from all of the games…sometimes with a classical arrangement…and sometimes with a fresh take on the music. And it works really well. The movie stars Chris Pratt (Guardians Of The Galaxy) as Mario, Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) as Luigi, Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) as Donkey Kong, Jack Black (School Of Rock) as Bowser, among other notable actors. And the performances are great.
All in all…I definitely recommend this really strong animated flick for audiences of all ages. And if you’re a child of the ’80’s like me who grew up playing Mario…you very well may love the picture as I did! Check out four of the movie’s stars going head-to-head at Mario Kart (a game I still play to this very day)….followed by videos of myself kicking Koopa arse in the greatest racing game ever! Go, Mario!
