Black Forest Cake

When there’s too much to do and no time to bake cakes, pies, cookies, and other Christmas and Chanukah confections, you go where the locals in your area go to sweeten up the holiday festivities.

I am a baker. The last thing I ever expected to do, was ask people where they buy their holiday pies , cookies, cakes, and other delcious baked goods.. My friends and family have always asked me to bring one or more of my homemade desserts to every gathering, holiday or not.

I’ve baked some incredible pies, cakes, cookies, brownies…etc throughout the years. My Dutch apple crumb, pecan, coconut custard, and blueberry pies seem to be the most requested. This time of year the rainbow cookies, and the cherry pie are also big on the list of requests.

I sifted through posts on the foodie pages on social media and message boards to find out where the locals are grabbing their holiday baked goods this year.

The people have let us know about their favorite places in Monmouth & Ocean to buy the freshest, most delicious pies, pastries, cookies and more for their holiday tables.

I wanted to keep the list short this year because some folks said they were getting dizzy from too many choices and were becoming indecisive. So a short list it is.

Thanks to dozens and dozens of baked goods lovers for helping me compile a list of places that you can shop for a tasty dessert for your holiday table.

I kept it to our local Monmouth and Ocean County community.

  • Emery's Farm - 346 Long Swamp Rd, New Egypt, NJ 08533

Worth the road trip from anywhere in Jersey. If you desire more than just pies, this place has it. I heard the banana walnut crumb cake with chocolate drizzle is a showstopper. Babakas, muffins, turnovers, jellies, Jams, and other homemade goodies can be found here. Robin Ann from the “What’s On Your Plate” FB page recommends the peach, cherry and blueberry pies.

  • Lucille's Country Cooking - 496 Main St, Barnegat Township, NJ 08005

Lucille’s is known in “The Pines” for their homemade pies. Regular patrons NEVER skip out before ordering a slice of one of Lucille’s fresh baked pies. You can order them too. The late Anthony Bourdain made this part of his food trail, and that’s proof enough for me that this place is worth a visit. Here’s to the late Lucille Bates for leaving behind an amazing legacy, and the recipe for her pies.

  • Sunburst Pie Company - 150 Main St, Manasquan, NJ 08736

Getting here early to grab a fresh baked pie is key, unless you pre-order your desserts. The banana cream pie has been described as, “luxurious”, and is a huge seller. The chocolate cream pie was mentioned a half a dozen times as well. It’s worth the stop. Oh, and the carrot cake is bigger than my head. Please don’t skip out without a quiche. It’s light and flaky and made with top quality ingredients.

  • David Burke's Dixie Lee Bakery - 303 Main St, Keansburg, NJ 07734

Their website says “Love is all you knead.”  Adorable!  breads, rolls, cakes, pastries, cookies, pies!  Head on in to this favorite hometown bakery for your holiday sweets.

  • Red Rose Bakery - 1843 Hooper Ave, Toms River, NJ 08753

The folks in the Silverton section of Toms River are first in line to order the beautiful custom cakes, and to pick up their large variety of pastries, brownies, cookies, especially the rainbow cookies, and so much more. When people bite into any Red Rose product, they’ll taste the hard work, commitment, and pride put forth by this family-owned business.

  • Mueller's Bakery - 80 Bridge Ave, Bay Head, NJ 08742

This place is a MUST mention. WRAT listeners voted them the best bakery on the Jersey Shore, and earned them a WRAT Shore Award. This place is dangerous for sweets lovers. Too many delicious pies, cakes, and pastries to choose from. The crumb cake has been around for well over 100 years.  If you want a killer apple strudel, then you’re in the right place.  Go to Muellers at some point in your life!

  • Waretown Bakery - 586 US-9, Waretown, NJ 08758

Not only does this bakery bake amazing everything, they always give back to the community. Donating baked goods to local hospitals, charity events and so much more. Their hearts are as good as their baked goods.

  • Del Ponte's Bakery - 600 Main St, Bradley Beach, NJ 07720

Del Ponte’s is one of those bakeries where you’ll go in for 1 or 2 things, and come out with 6 or 7 incredible desserts.

  • Elisa's Bakery - 1900 NJ-70, Lakewood, NJ 08701

In the strip Mall behind Home Depot on Route 70. Elisa’s is another bakery where you go for a seeded Italian bread on a Sunday and walk out with a dozen pastries, and a couple of pounds of cookies. It’s insane! I love Elisa’s!
