The Morning Rat Race

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 08: New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman speaks to the media prior to the start of the game against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium on April 08, 2022 in New York City.

Good morning, Sports fans!  It’s your kindly ambassador of athletics here…Davey Mac…and I’ve got a rather large and exciting Sports Report for ya!  We’ve got all kinds of news and scores in football, basketball, and hockey!  But first…a little baseball hot stove talk!  Let’s dive right in!  And today’s topic- the always interesting New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman!

Aaron Judge Press Conference

Cashman talked with reporters yesterday following the Yankees acquisition of All Star Juan Soto.  Cashman said: “We’re in it to win it…I think we certainly want to try to always under the Steinbrenner leadership make this the mecca of baseball.”

Now, while I love Cashman’s statement…I’m hesitant to trust him.  The simple truth is that Cashman has made one poor trade/free agent signing after another.  Think Joey Gallo, Luke Donaldson, Aaron Hicks, and more…all busts.

Tampa Bay Rays v New York Yankees

Meanwhile, Aaron Judge is getting impatient and no one can blame him.  Judge has been absolutely unbelievable for six years now and the Yankees seem to be getting further away from a World Series title rather than closer to it.

New York Yankees v Toronto Blue Jays

Furthermore, now is the moment for Hal Steinbrenner.  If he is going to keep Cashman around and not fire him after this past dreadful season in which the Yanks missed the playoffs, then Hal has open to open up the wallet for Cashman. …but then deliver an ultimatum to him: Win a World Series in 2024 or you’ve out.

Hey, I’m a Yankees fan.  Ultimately, it’s all about the team’s success.  If Cashman can somehow regain the baseball IQ that made him a solid gm fifteen years ago…AND if the Yankees WIN…then great!  But the pressure is on for Cashman.  He better win this year…or it’ll be a very dark day in the Bronx.  Now on to the Scoreboard!
