Chi-Chi’s Is Making a Comeback After 20 Years
Chi-Chi’s launched back in the ’70s, and I love me some Chi-Chi’s. They were a huge hit back in the ’80s and ’90s, with more than 200 locations nationwide. The Tex-Mex chain is making a comeback after 20 years!
They did go through bankruptcy, and ownership changes, and the final blow came back in 2003, when some bad green onions at Chi-Chi’s led to the largest hepatitis A outbreak in American history.
Hundreds of people got sick and four people died.
Let’s hope this time around they have all that squared away, and cleaned it all up. Some salsa products have remained in stores ever since, and up until earlier this year, there was a single Chi-Chi’s still open in Vienna, Austria.
The Future Of Chi-Chi’s And What To Expect
A man named Michael McDermott is the son of the original owner, Marno McDermott. He will be taking the ropes to guide an open new restaurant under the Chi-Chi’s name next year 2025. The first location will be in Minnesota, which is also the state where the original restaurant opened back in 1976.
One of its classic items was the fried ice cream. Let’s hope they bring that back, but they can keep the green onions. As I was growing up, this spot was a fan favorite of mine, family, and friends. The owner did say this “I still have fond memories of growing up in the Chi-Chi’s restaurants that my father built throughout their time, instilling in me the passion and determination to pursue my career in the restaurant industry,” McDermott said in a news release. We wish them the best of luck and hope they bring some locations to Jersey.
