Music fans are mourning the death of Shane MacGowan today as the Pogues’ frontman has died at the age of 65. A brilliant songwriter…MacGowan and the Pogues were arguably the founders of Celtic-punk…a mash-up of traditional Irish & English music with a punk rock attitude.
And while their style was basic at first with songs like “Steams Of Whiskey”…the Pogues continued to push the boundaries of what they were musically capable of. Songs like “Fiesta,” “A Rainy Night In Soho,” “If I Should Fall From Grace With God,” and the UK-banned Christmas classic “Fairytale Of New York” showed that MacGowan and the Pogues had great range.
MacGowan has also partnered up with bands like the Dropkick Murphys…who cite him as a major influence and inspiration for their music. He will be missed. Scroll down for some excellent Pogues videos. And rest in peace, Shane.
